BIOS Update
This BIOS Update documentation will demonstrate how to update a computer’s BIOS that may be required in order to fix computer bugs or add new features to your system. It is important that you have a specific reason for updating your BIOS, doing so when there is no need is an unwanted risk that should not be taken into consideration. Usually, a motherboard or computer manufacturer will tell you if an update for your system is required. Additionally, if you have a greater knowledge of your PC and want to modify your BIOS to achieve a specific goal, consider making an inquiry in our Forum.
The first thing to identify when updating your BIOS is what platform you’re system uses; the most common being Award, AMI, and Phoenix, which we will go into further detail later.
To identify what platform your BIOS uses, check to see if any of these logos appear on bootup:
If none of these images help you identify your motherboard BIOS company, the easiest way to check this information is by using identification tools such as Everest or CPUID, or simply consult your manual or OEM manufacturer.
After you have determined the BIOS type, you can use the corresponding methods listed below. We will also review situations where the manufacturer provides the easy “one click” solution.
The “One Click” Solution: This is a term that refers to computer companies that package BIOS updates that are designed to be run in Windows without any hassle. If you are simply trying to update to the latest BIOS version released from a computer manufacturer and are not computer savvy, please download the package found on your support page (only applies for prebuilt systems!) A generic list of links to support pages is listed below:
Acer | ASUS | Dell | eMachines | Gateway | HP | Lenovo | Toshiba
If you do not fall under the one click category, then its time to prepare a bootable USB flashdrive that we will use to boot DOS. This is needed to run the FLASH routine.
Download the HP USB disk format tool and install it.
Once installed, open the utility and select the USB flashdrive to format. Below, tick the bubble for creating an MSDOS startup disk. It will then want you to point it to a DOS image folder. You will need to download and unzip this DOS image (do NOT use your own DOS image) here. Once it has completed formatting your drive, open up the USB flashdrive in My Computer. Verify that there are only three files on the USB flashdrive. Be sure to unhide hidden and system files so that you can be sure that there are only three files. If you see three DOS files, you are ready for the next phase.
Copy the BIOS update image that you want to flash to the USB flashdrive (If you are unsure of where to get this, please post in our forums). For the Award platform, the BIOS file should be named “bios.bin”; for AMI, it should be named “bios.rom”; and for Phoenix, it should be named “bios.bin”
The final preparation stage needed for our USB flashdrive is the flash utility itself, which varies according to the platform. According to your platform, download the appropriate utility to your flash drive below.
Award BIOS= Award Flash
AMI BIOS= AFUDOS
Phoenix BIOS= PHLASH
Finally, reboot your computer and select your USB flashdrive as you boot DOS. Then, enter the following command based on your BIOS: (for a complete list of switches, consult our forums)
AWARD= awdflash bios.bin /py /sn /f /cc /r
AMI= afudos bios.rom /P /B /N /C /E /K /Q /REBOOT
PHOENIX=phlash bios.bin
While the update is in progress, do NOT touch your keyboard or turn off your PC. Avoid doing this while there is a possibility of a power outage as well.
If you followed all of these steps correctly, then your computer will successfully reboot with the updated BIOS!

Please try using the Universal BIOS Backup software utility to do this, or use PHFLASH to make a copy of the BIOS from DOS.
You mention a “Universal BIOS Backup software utility” – here’s a link for a utility: http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/9856-Universal-BIOS-Backup-Toolkit

i have a Biostar Motherboard and the bios says is a Phoenix-award, in the biostar page of this Model there is NO DOS based flash utility, only Windows and online utility.that same site says i can flash it from a pendrive if i hit f12 in the post will lead me to the flash udate utility build in the bios,but nothing happens.no flash utility,now that option is on the bios but is to use the obsolete-untrusty floppy drive to flash it!so i need some help here,flashing it from floppy is not an option,i need a DOS based flash utility to burn it on a bootable cd or pendrive, but has i say this bios ver is strange at leas for me since its says its Phoenix-Award! and here i see that or there is a phoenix flash utility or award but not both together? i read somewere phoenix and award have fussioned so there must be an utility, ive tryed but i dint find any. any sugestions? my motherboard is Biostar NF61S AM2 ver 6.1
Please use the AWDFLASH utility via DOS to flash Award BIOSes (which is what you have).
I’ve been searching, and searching, for a bios update for my HP Pavilion a6530f Desktop PC. I currently have the BIOS Version/Date Phoenix Technologies, LTD 5.13, 5/2/2008, I would LOVE to have a BIOS that is overclock-able for this pc, or even just an-up-to-date bios would be great, please and thank you , Joshua

sp61005.exe
1. There was no bin file after extracting SP61005.exe
2. How to covert exe to bin for further use in creating the flash drive.
Thanks.
Sometimes the file names will not be directly “.bin” Look for files that could be the image, i.e. 1024KB size, 2048KB, etc.
so i have a phoenix technologies, LTD / award bios v6.00pg bios . so which one do i have, im a little confused. the logo is phoenix but it says award. and is there any way to do a cdrom version of this procedure because my bios doesnt recognize usb booting.
Phoenix Ltd. purchased the Award platform quite some years back. You have an award bios in this case, which can be read by CBROM.
I’ve been trying to flash my BIOS on my HP pavilion m9340f desktop PC with ASUS IPIBL-LB motherboard and AMI (modified by HP) BIOS since I believe its corrupted and I can’t boot into Windows. I’ve posted on the HP forums with the details but haven’t received any responses that worked
http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Lockups-Freezes-Hangs/bios-not-fully-acpi-compliant/td-p/3026931
I’ve extracted what I believe to be the ROM file from the latest HP BIOS download using 7zip, renamed it HPBIOS.ROM and tried the instructions here but when I run afudos with the suggested parameters It just returns to the DOS prompt and when I run it with /s to get the current BIOS info I get “-Error: BIOS is write protected”. I’ve also tried the AMI BUPDATER but get the response “Failed to find the update module”. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

need to update my bios to be able to do virtualization (motherboard model C14CR01 POSITIVO, intel core i3 2328M 8GB intel HD Graphics) can someone help me?
Instruction very unclear.
I’ve got bios.whp provided from “https://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-Request-to-unlock-advance-features-in-Acer-Aspire-5740-Bios-Phoenix-1-28?page=2”
and the tool for Phoenix BIOS= PHLASH is named different in the zip.
Hello h35am,
When entering the command, replace “phlash” with the name of the phlash executable in the archive. In this case, you would type “ph1614 bios.wph” to flash your BIOS.

Is there a particular reason you are looking to update your BIOS? Probably not worth upgrading unless there is a particular problem you are having with your machine.
hello i have a dell inspirion 3537 and my bios has not option to disable intel graphics what can i do ?
i have hybrid graphics and i have problem with my linux i have to disable one of my graphic cards
Might be best to post help for this in our forums where the community can give you better support.
Does the above mentioned procedure can be applied for any motherboard?
Yes, as long as you match up the type of BIOS it is.
