How to peek inside a bios that comes as a "upd"?
#1
Hi all,t
I have a Fujitsu U729 laptop running the latest 2.30 bios (InsydeH20) on this thing and it is abolutely great with one drawback: of the two m.2 slots (one houses a m.2 ssd and one houses a whitelisted Sierra GSM module) i really really, at the end of the day, would like to remove that white-list.
But first things first. I assume this laptop/bios hides a few settings in its bios.

I went over here: https://www.laptopserviz.bg/forum/showth...BIOS-TOOLS and downloaded a few older tools that supposedly was able to show various things from the bios

Downloading that package brought me a number of different versions of executables (some i could even run on W11). But they all expect bios-files with ".FD" extensions. When i google tools, they all seem to expect bios-files that have the ".bin" extension (or ".rom"). In my case, when i download the official bios and unpack the .exe file to get to its innards, all i find are a couple of ".upd" files (~11mb large each one).

Renaming them to .rom or .bin will not make them load into this insydeh20 editor.

Any hints what i can try next?

All i really want to do at this stage is to peek the menus of this bios.

thx in advance

Hey there,
Yeah, Fujitsu laptops can be a bit tricky when it comes to BIOS modding — especially with InsydeH20 firmware. Those .upd files you’re seeing are indeed BIOS update files, but they’re packed in a proprietary format, not a standard .bin or .fd. That’s why most of the usual tools won’t open them directly.

If your goal is just to peek at hidden BIOS menus rather than flash anything, you might try extracting the BIOS region using tools like UEFITool or Insyde BIOS Extractor. Sometimes you can unpack the .upd file to get the actual .bin or .fd inside.

Also, you can often reveal hidden settings temporarily using software like RU.EFI, or by accessing the advanced BIOS menu through specific key combos (though Fujitsu usually locks those down).

If you just want to explore and not risk a brick, I’d strongly avoid flashing modified files unless you have a backup and a hardware programmer (like CH341A).

You’re definitely on the right track — start with UEFITool and see if you can pull a readable image out of that .upd.
