ASUS X58L AMIBIOS - Penryn & Chipset Questions
#11
(12-21-2013, 02:37 PM)Raalph Wrote: In that case there are two options: your laptop is magic or Intel on their website is lying Smile. I think that second option is the right one. That means that your GL960 is a crippled version of 965 with just one difference and that is 2/3GB of max supported amount of ram. If we dont know why do they lie it means it has to do something with money Big Grin

If celeron 925 was released in 2009 that doesn't mean it was invented/made at the same time.

look at the picture, 06 means that the core or technology to make that kind of cpu was made/inwented in 2006. So why did they release it in 2009? Answer would be the same.... money. Why would they put it in the market in 2006/2007 if they had older 65 nm cpus to sell in the first place Smile That's my guess.

That would make a lot of sense. But I'm not sure if the RAM limitation is the only difference. I also have a feeling that the GMA X3100 graphics chip has been altered to a lower speed (as is the case in GL960 chipsets).

In the GM965, it's clocked at 500 MHz, while in the GL960, Intel downclocks it to 400 MHz, which reduces memory bandwidth from 10.7 GB/s to just 8.5 GB/s.

Different programs give me different results for the GPU core speed. For example, AIDA64 states 400 MHz, while GPU-Z states 500 MHz. CPU-Z doesn't give a GPU clock reading at all (it's grayed out).

No idea which one to believe. I appreciate all the help. Smile

I'd just like to update the thread to notify any users reading this, that the T9300 upgrade for the ASUS X58L was a success, using Antec Formula 7 thermal compound. Temperatures for both cores are keeping at, or below 32°C, even under load. At idle, both cores sit around 26°C.

I've also gained a respectable 40 fps boost in Minecraft, bring it up to 90 fps while standing still. Realistic figures indicate around 73 fps while walking, which is great (it was previously 38 fps, with the T5900).

I'm yet to try Photoshop out, but I have a feeling that productivity won't be a problem.
