I purchased a Google GB-1002 Server 4 Xeon 2.6 Ghz 5X 250 GB 12GB RAM after reading this article:
http://davehope.co.uk/Blog/turn-an-old-g...sx-server/
And I figured that if I swapped out the bios then I'd have a really nice machine to play with ESX and all.
When I powered up and tried to go into the bios it had a password.
So I reset the bios by swapping the jumper next to the chip and swapping it back and that let me into the bios
Once in bios I noticed that things were really restrictive so I reset the settings and I got the machine to boot on the standard http://ubcd4win.com/ cd - but whenever I tried to install an os, it froze on the last steps...
No matter the os, no matter the medium I was installing on...
I dug and found out the names of all the hardware and I found all the proper drivers and I was able to get to put the drivers into the cd and boot and recognize the hard drives / raid but NOT the ethernet card. It kept saying that it was locked or in use.... I could install drivers, it would recognize the lan, but not let me use it.
So my thoughts then went to the bios - as I think there are settings in there that prevent the use of the nic that might have been hidden by Google.
Though I don't know...
So I did some digging and I found a newer bios (F7 from here:
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Netwo...uctID=1006 )
And I made myself a dos boot floppy and flashed to this bios and ever since then I haven't been able to boot the machine - when I turn it on I get a siren like sound kind of bino bino bino - similar to a police car no matter the location of the jumper next to the bios.
I think.... what I'm looking for here is a modded bios set to perform just what I need it to do on these machines.
I still have one of the machines that are nearly identical that boots up via a usb cdrom.
I have two of these machines and I haven't touched the other until I figure out what I'm supposed to do to properly set the first up.
I attached pictures of the chips and board as well as the hardware list of the machine.
Thank you in advance!
