Hi, new to these forums, I hope this is the right place to post this.
Here are my questions: Has anyone tried installing a Core 2 Quad CPU in an Intel PM965 mobo? I’m thinking about upgrading my Dell XPS M1730 Laptop’s Core 2 Duo X9000 to a Core 2 Quad QX9300, but I’m not sure if it will work. If it doesn’t, will I be able to find help here? Thanks, here are some useful links, and noteworthy information…
X9000 (OC-able via BIOS, best CPU they offered with laptop.)
Socket: PGA478, Socket P, ZIF
TDP: 44W
Max Power Consumption (Worst Case Scenario):
68.81 - cpu-world.com
FSB: 800MHz
L2 Cache: 6MB
45nm Lithography
QX9300 (No quad-core CPUs were sold with laptop.)
Socket: Same
TDP: 45W
Max Power Consumption (Worst Case Scenario):
74.35 - cpu-world.com
FSB: 1066MHz
L2 Cache: 12MB total, 6MB per-die
Same Lithography
Chip has two die, which is interesting.
Intel PM965
Max FSB According to Dell’s Manual: 1066MHz (45nm Duo Processors)
Max FSB According to Intel’s PDF: 800MHz
Max L2 Cache According to Dell’s Manual: 6MB (45nm Duo Processors)
Quad CPU’s never mentioned in either PDFs.
Laptop Power Supply and Consumption
GPU: 8800m GTX in SLI, consumes 130W
Power Supply: ~230W - 19.5v 11.8 A
