I got my computer back after a long, exhausting wait. It took so long that I almost forgot about this thread.

Anyway, final update: it appears that replacing the cooling fan has solved the fan throttling issue, however the fan control (normal/silent) still doesn't work, neither do the tweaked temperature controls. Apparently it's a serious hardware issue with these units. Well, at least it doesn't run hot enough to fry an egg on its keyboard, but still, it's quite annoying to buy a product that doesn't work properly.

Stay away from LG's laptop computers, that's my final advice for you all.
