so i woke up today and started to think of the LPT parallel cable SPI flash for which ? hmm W25X80 (001200EF) and MX25l800 (001300C2)

i have the cable and the technology.. just not the experience (i went to I.T.T. tech in 1993 for electronics eng .. yeah i never finished it)
one interesting note i found in comments is

This tutorial was a huge help although I had a different chip that threw in a few changes. In case you’re reading this and you have to flash a Macronix chip, here are some tips.
1. Manf. datasheet was very helpful… find it and use it. Here’s the one I had.

2. remember HOLD# pin and WE# pin must be tied high for the chip to be recognized
3. Use FlashROM, it’s a much more robust program. I got a bad flash using SPIPGM (or SPIPGM2) that I believe was due to the speed of the programming. The name of the Rayer programmer in the command line is “rayer_bitbang_isp”
I didn’t time the programming, but I believe it was even faster than the Rayer code despite warnings of slow programming on his site.

4. CWSDPMI link is dead on the Rayer page… use this one or google it because it is required.
