HP 15-ac158nl try to set DVMT
#1
Hi all,
I tried to change my DVMT pre allocate variable value to 96mb to boot the mac installation process on the laptop in subject.
I used a EFI shell but i got the "can't set value error".
I dumped my bios by fptw64.exe but i don't know how to change the value of variable i need (variable 0x18C to value 0x3).
I found the variable by Phoenixtool and Universal IFR Extractor.
I tried also to search, by hex editor, in the offset of the variable found in the dumped .bin but I think it's encripted because i don't find the hex string that phoenixtool gave to me.
Any suggestions for next step to get the result are really welcome !!
Ciao
G.

Other Information:
Bios is a Insyde H20, actually version F.1A but i can decrease do F.11 (originally laptop had F.19)
Bios ID is: 80C1

I mean... the "if" statment should set this variable ?

Thanks BDMAster,
I'm going to read all 32 pages of that post... really a didn't understand the start post that points to signed bios but say about Phoenixtool can't read them (maybe old versions).
Phoenixtool256 can read my bios dump and told me it's signed finding a key.... I supposed that was an old post and i passed over.
Thanks again

Thank you BDMaster,
I understood only now that you suggest to use the EFI shell command.
May I didn't explain too well in my first post.
I alredy tried this road as first tentative and i got a "can't set variable using EFI" so now I'm thinking if there's an alternative way to change this variable value. I thinked that it's possible to change the value directly in my dumped decripted bios file but:
- I can't find the absolute offset of that variable, to change it's value by an hex editor
- I still don't know if it's possibile to flash the modified (if I'll find the offeset) bios file directly (using fptw for example).
I plan to modify the bios file and use phoenixtool256 (as explained in donovan6000 blog) to make new .bin

To bypass the problem for first topic (don't know the offset of variable 018C) I thinked to modify all the IF structure i found as i wrote in my second post, i suppose also that to do this change will be useful if the variable will be resetted at booting time.

I've still not find a way to understand if it's possibile to flash a RSA bios. I got my original bios bin and 2 more files that i think are the keys to sign it (.s12 and .sig)

Sorry for my poor english and the lenght of this post but i would like to explain better my situation and try to understand what i'm doing.
Ciao

Too many issues for this work !
The Firmware is RSA Signed and only by SPI PGM We can TRY to rewrite back the
Bios Mod as HP is going to change all RSA asset and It could be a problem !
Then To read the VarStore is possible only by FalseClock Method and Edit the
EFI IFR came to RSA again !
Let me know

HI,
it's easy to download it.
Go to HP support web site, search for my laptop model software.
You'll find the bios software upgrade, there you can choose the "previous version" options to download.
When you get the SPxxxxx.exe execute it and choose the extract to Hard Disk option, the program will save the bin files where you decided.
