Asus P5KC: Xeon Support
#1
Hello, guys. Have a problem with temperature measuring of CPU. Hardware monitor in bios shows more than 100*C. But Everest shows 106*C for CPU, 25*C for core 1, 23*C for core 2, 22*C for core 3, 22*C for core 4 and bottom part of cooler is worm. I tried to find necessary firmware but can't find update for bios ASUS P5KC with XEON X5460 micrcodes. Asking for Your help.

Hey guys, just looking for some help on getting a bios to stabilize my system, been using a Xeon E5405 on an asus P5KC for about 2 years, but since upgrading to windows 10 I've been getting ALOT of bsod events.

I remember trying to add the microcode previously, when I first installed the Xeon, but I remember having mixed success and not feeling overly comfortable with it.

Any help with this would be great, as I'm sure this isn't my only issue given that I am running older hardware on windows 10, some drivers have been a bit of a nightmare, and I'm just trying to rule out as many things as possible to narrow down the problem.

I've had a few issues with the virtual memory, but I have no idea if a new bios would help with that.

As I say, never had any issues before, on startup I get the "unknown cpu" error, so just trying to eliminate that from my system and help stabilize it.

I am not adverse to spending some money on getting a better Xeon, this one was just dirt cheap at the time, and I know the X5450 gives some pretty nice OC speeds.

So basically my question is the following; Can someone please add the microcodes for the E5405 and the X5450 to the bios for the p5kc (attached the latest stock rom). Or is it worth me just upgrading to the X5450 where a bios already exists (maybe)?

thanks for any help - sorry to be a one post wonder atm

hey man, thanks for reply, I wasn't sure where to start with just lifting a bios from a site as I know most people that have used this mod have a different version of the processor, do you know 100% that these 2 roms have the microcodes I need?

I can try flashing them, but would rather not have to reset cmos etc if they should fail, thanks

Have attached the info you asked for re: my bsod's, was more than happy to continue to troubleshoot that myself, I think most of the problems stem from my older hardware not having support into windows 10, so I'm constantly having to install older drivers, in compatibly mode or manually. My main machine is much more up-to-date and I haven't had any issues, this machine is more of a media server, and I'm starting to wish I had just listened to my friend and installed windows server instead.

Most of the BSOD errors are ntoskrnl.exe related, which I understand to be drivers or RAM issues, the RAM is at least in theory too fast for this mobo, but I assumed it would downclock it. I did upgrade the ram from ddr2 at the same time as installing windows 10, so I can't be completely sure that its not the RAM, although I've had SEVERAL driver issues as I say.

I also believe this to be driver related, as windows driver diagnostic tool fails on this PC and will just lock it into a bootloop until I use safemode to turn it off.

I've attached what bluescreen viewer outputs too. (1.png)

any tips would be great.

the next step I was going to take was to run memtest on the RAM.

thanks again

Your BIOS hasn't microcode for your CPU and many features of it are disabled. So you must update BIOS.
I recommend to flash the mod of 1303 version by IdeaFix.
Download this file, unzip, go to \1303\771\ and flash P5KC-1303.ROM file.
After flashing & reboot make new screenshot of regedit with expanded key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System\CentralProcessor\0
And new CPU-Z TXT Report world be useful.

Yes I know the bios doesnt have the microcodes, that was the reason for my original post here.

I tried flashing the bios you recommended, but for some reason my windows wouldn't boot, just a blank screen with the flashing cursor.

I googled for reasons why that would be, and found some older posts about AHCI settings, and figured its probably treating my SSD as an IDE drive, but in the bios settings the only option under 'sata configuration' is IDE and on the next page, AHCI support is enabled.

I flashed back to the stock bios rom, and booted into windows fine, but had the usual "unknown cpu" error.

Shortly after, I had a BSOD, and now my windows wont boot at all, and is saying "inaccessible boot device"

I've tried safe mode, and it restarts the PC.

So it looks like I am going to have to reinstall windows, what I wanted to ask you was, should I just flash to the 1303 bios again before I fresh install?

I have literally no idea why it cant read my ssd, or if it will do the exact same thing again.

Did you set all values to default after flashing?
Try other version of BIOS mod.

Yes I tried resetting to defaults, as well as changing the settings and nothing.

I noticed that the settings were pretty much staying the same between changing bios over, the only real changes were to the booting order and devices, so I just made sure my ssd was the only thing on the boot order each time.

I also went back to 1203 (modded in 2015 - from the rar you posted) and the single zip file 1203 (modded in 2014) as well as another 2014 mod I had.

All 3 did the exact same thing, only the stock rom was able to boot into windows at all.

I'm not overly familiar with the windows 10 blue screen recovery options, but I did attempt a few of them, and nothing seems to be working.

Some posts online suggest it may be that I installed windows on an AHCI and its now being ignored. One solution for this was to boot into safe mode, and install an AHCI controller, but I cant get to desktop even on safe mode.

Do Load Setup Defaults and Exit & Save Changes.

Show fotos of it with native BIOS and mod.
P.S. Try to disable overclocking.
