[REQUEST] Acer Aspire E5-553(G) BIOS Unlock
#91
(05-20-2017, 07:51 AM)mclarke2355 Wrote: Ok, here you go: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4NHIBM...VHcXM/view

You need to put the vars_mod_mynetmailid.txt file in the folder with the H2OUVE.exe file and execute the following command in an administrative command prompt in that folder:
H2OUVE.exe -sv vars_mod_mynetmailid.txt
H2OUVE will update the NVRAM area of the BIOS and after a reboot the new setting should be active.

Hi,
would you please help me to unlock amd-v for my laptop, ACER ASPIRE E5-553G -F79R. Here's my vars file.
Thanks so much for your help :-)

People running Linux can grab H2OUVE-L (x86/x64) from here:

https://github.com/chinese-opendesktop/r...in.src.rpm

You can also get H2OFFT-L (x86/x64) from here:

Hi,
here's your modded vars-file with AMD-V enabled and SMM Code Lock disabled: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4NHIBM...RTU2c/view

Before you try flashrom, you should apply the modded vars-file first as the disabled SMM Code Lock is important.

You need to put the vars_mod_--seb--.txt file in the folder with the H2OUVE.exe file and execute the following command in an administrative command prompt in that folder:
H2OUVE.exe -sv vars_mod_--seb--.txt
H2OUVE will update the NVRAM area of the BIOS and after a reboot the new setting should be active.

I'll write more regarding flashrom later as I don't have much time right now.

@FerchogtX
Hi,
here's your modded vars-file with AMD-V enabled: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4NHIBM...A5SXM/view

You need to put the vars_mod_FerchogtX.txt file in the folder with the H2OUVE.exe file and execute the following command in an administrative command prompt in that folder:
H2OUVE.exe -sv vars_mod_FerchogtX.txt
H2OUVE will update the NVRAM area of the BIOS and after a reboot the new setting should be active.

This method will only enable AMD-V and not mess with any of the other settings of your BIOS.
In case you want to revert to default, you can go back to default with the following command:
H2OUVE.exe -sv vars.txt
Using the reset to defaults option in the BIOS would work, too.

@yoshh1999
Ok, here you go: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4NHIBM...JqVms/view

You need to put the vars_mod_yoshh1999.txt file in the folder with the H2OUVE.exe file and execute the following command in an administrative command prompt in that folder:
H2OUVE.exe -sv vars_mod_yoshh1999.txt
H2OUVE will update the NVRAM area of the BIOS and after a reboot the new setting should be active.

sorry long time not online again. thx a lot for our help. great work Big Grin Big Grin

I set the 0xEE bit in the Setup section of the vars file and installed it, and it appears I now have VM capability (dmesg no longer shows "KVM disabled by BIOS" and kvm starts an old XP Vm I had lying around. There is the following complaint on startup:

warning: host doesn't support requested feature: CPUID.01H:ECX.vmx [bit 5]

but the XP VM seems to work fine.

I haven't tried clearing the 0x14D bit and have no idea what it does or if it has any relation to AMD-V/svm. If anyone knows what these bits are, or even better has specs on the entire vars file contents, please post.

I have an E5-553G-1986 1.13 bios, vars file attached.

I diffed the original and modded Ferchogtx vars (larger context diff attached):

1530c1530
<             000000E0: 00 00 00 02 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 01 00 00 00

>             000000E0: 00 00 00 02 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 01 00 01 00
1536c1536
<             00000140: 00 00 01 00 00 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 00 02

>             00000140: 00 00 01 00 00 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 02

The changes are two bits in the Setup section, setting 0xEE and clearing 0x14D (if I am counting hex right).

My E0 and 140 lines are identical with the unmodded Fertchogtx lines. Should I just set/clear these two bits in my vars? Please make me a modded vars file if there is more to it than that, and thanks in advance.

Any chance you could summarize what these bits are? If there is a doc floating around describing various bits to twiddle, I'd sure like to get a look at it.

Lastly, I'm hesitant to upgrade the bios (current is 1.18 I think), wouldn't put it past Acer to 'fix' the bios so their crippling can't be undone. Any advice from anyone about the newer bioses would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Thanks for the pointer to the github source. It will be good to not have to boot MSFT to do this. Getting the h2offt executable source would be cool, but at least having the kernel module source is good.

Apparently the 0XEE bit in Setup enables SVM aka AMD-V, and the 0x14D bit enables SMM Code Lock. SMM is apparently a security nightmare, and if disabling SMM Code Lock is not necessary for SVM/AMD-V, it sounds like you probably don't want to do it unless you know exactly what it does. It seems to have nothing to do with SVM/AMD-V, and perhaps leaves your system open to malware flashing your bios.
