a little late to the party...
I recently inherited a dx2300, and one of the first things I did was to increase the onboard aperture from 64mb to maximum, and I noticed the available memory drop that you did. Lots of issues with graphics in windows 10 requiring custom drivers which occasionally default back to stock windows (thank you, windows 10) requiring reinstall.
I then inherited an old PCIexpress graphics card, slotted it in, and everythings plain sailing... except the option to reduce the graphics aperture has vanished. From this I surmise that it only appears if you don't have a PCI express graphics card installed... so you can't reduce the aperture and free up RAM unless you remove the card.
6 screws and a poorly seated PCI express card that requires fiddling to get working are disincentive enough for me to accept only having 3.25GB RAM to play old games with...
