Hi,

just about to upgrade my Laptop a little bit.

SSD instead of HDD -> Done
CPU upgraded - T9600 instead of T5800 -> Done

Next thing on the list would be to replace WiFi 5100 with s.th. e.g. like 7260.

From all I have read this is not possible w/o removal of the whitelist.

Searched already for an existing Bios with whitelist removed, but did not have any success..

Can you help me please?

Details:

Model: Lenovo 3000 N500, machine type 4233-47G

Bios: Phoenix
Bios Version: 6GET12WW (V1.03)
ECVersion: 6GEC14WW (V1.03)

PS: I want to keep my HDMI ;-)

Thanks in advance

Hi FiveFourty,

CPU:
very interesting. Why did you decide for the T9600 to use and not maximum possible T9900 (!?), also 35Watt and also Socket P https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_P
, but 1066Mhz instead of 800 FSB of the T5800?
http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Co...et_P).html
http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Co...T5800.html (also Socket_P)
How did you know, that Bios supported T9600?
What about the other faster cpu with socket-P, like the "Extreme" or "quad" versions? Would the yrun as well?
http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Co...index.html

Is your T9600 already running fine in the N500 or just only installed and not started?

BENCHMARKS:
Here would be a speed comparison for the both and to choose also other e.g. Core2 cpu
http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Int...795vsm2272

+67 % effective speed :-) ! T9600 vs. T5800

The T9600 allows for "Intel Virtualization" (possible to run e.g. a parallel XP-modus in some cases), the T5800 not. What is needed except the cpu to make that run on the N500?

If T9600 (cpu "Penryn" Core2Duo Dual 45nm) is running, wouldn't it be possible to run also the other/faster "Penryn" or Socket-P cpu(s)?
http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Co...index.html
http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Co...index.html
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_In...processors
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Core_2
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Core_2#Merom

In case of the fastest Core2 Socket-P cpu with the ~45Watt"Intel Core2 Extreme X9770" a
+237 % effective speed compared to T5800 (35Watt)

In case of the fastest Core2 Socket-P "Quad" with the 45Watt "Q" "Intel Core2 Quad Q9650" a
+208 % effective speed compared to T5800 (35Watt)

In case of the fastest Core2 Socket-P "Duo" with the 65Watt "E" "Intel Core2 Duo E8600" a
+111 % effective speed compared to T5800 (35Watt)

In case of the fastest Core2 Socket-P "Duo" with the 35Watt "T" "Intel Core2 Duo T9900" a
+88 % effective speed compared to T5800 (35Watt)
and +12 % to your T9600 (35Watt).

What is the cpu limit to change to?
The 35 Watt or the 800MHz FSB or the 65nm or cpu sSpec number or the VID Voltage range 1,075V-1,175V (other list shows 1,0375V-1,3V)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_In...ge,_65_nm)
like the original installed T5800 has?
Or is BIOS a prob for cpu upgrade or the possible multiplicators?

BTW,
the cpu "Merom (65nm)" comes in 4 different voltage-versions, but not all come with Socket-P !!!!!!!!!
1,0375V - 1,3V Merom (standard voltage) Socket-P, some yes, some no !
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_In...ge,_65_nm)
--------------
and "Merom" (Core2 Duo)
0,9V - 1,1V (low-voltage) 12/17Watt NON Socket-P
0,9V - 1,2V (low-voltage) 12/Watt NON Socket-P
1,0V - 1,25V (low-voltage) 20Watt NON Socket-P
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_In...ge,_65_nm)
-------------
and "Merom-L" (Core2 Solo)
0,86V - 0,975V () 5,5Watt, NON Socket-P
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_In...22_(65_nm)
-------------
and "Merom-2M" (Core2 Duo)
0,8V - 0,975V (ultra-low-voltage) 10Watt, Socket-P, some yes, some no !!!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_In...ge,_65_nm)
-------------

"Penryn" mobile - cpu has also some different versions, 10-44 Watts, 1,2GHz - 3,07GHz of speed ....

BIOS:
Maybe that thread can be of help:
https://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-N...ios-unlock
I do have the same Lenovo 3000 N500 Type 4233 47G (Nov.2008) but still with T5800 (cpu "Menrom" Core2Duo Dual 65nm) Bios Version 1.03.
My HDD crashed (WD 320GB 5400/min) and now I'm planing to max out this notebook with new and faster components.
Is the 1.09 Bios really needed for e.g. a T9600 to run?
I read, that Bios Version 1.09 and 1.10 doesn't support HDMI any more, is that right?
Where to find other than 1.09 or 1.10 Bios, as Lenovo only offers those two?
To flash the Bios it is said, that one needs Windows Vista. (As my HDD with Vista crashed and do not have extra Vista CD/DVD 32bit, just the Product Key on the case (Windows Vista HmPrem OA (EM)-(MEA), would like to change to a Linux/Win7 future, what would you recommend to do about the Bios 1.03?

RAM:
Any idea, of changing to 8GB RAM? I would like to use 64bit Win7 next time.
Is it possible to use 8GB (2x4GB)? The specs say, max. only 4GB (2x2GB).
What is max. possible RAM with BIOS 1.03 or 1.09 or 1.10? Or does BIOS have no influence on that?
Using only 667MHz or also 800MHz possible and advantagious?
https://www.compuram.de/arbeitsspeicher/...ries/n500/

MINI-PCIe Express card:
I'm wondering, if this Mini PCIe slot would allow for a SSD 128GB card (with an integrated mSATA controller), to boot from and use as system drive?
Any idea to use this one?
http://www.mx-technology.com/en/industri...php?sid=42
https://www.mobilegeeks.de/testbericht-m...ettrennen/
PCIe x1 can offer max. 250 MByts/s (2,5 Gbits/s) which would be way faster than normal SATA HDD. (SATA1= supports max.1,5Gb/s, SATA2= supports max.3Gb/s, SATA3= supports max.6GB/s, but HHD go max. ~100Mbyts/s, only SSD go until ~500MByts/s.) And our WD 320GB HDD is just at a SATA1 slot (!?) = max. supports 1,5Gbits/s = ~150MByts/s, IF !!!) AND, reaction time ~20ms for HDD (slow @5400rpm) and only less ~1ms for SSD.

I know, Mini-PCIe and mSATA look the same hardware wise, but one of controllers (southbridge) would need to detect/handle the right interface.
My question would be, is a SSD with A controller enough to run on the N500 board, or is there more chips needed to use mSATA on that mPCIe slot of the N500 notebook?

WLAN / WiFi:
In case, the SSD-mini PCIe solution will not work, I would be happy to upgrade the Wifi to 802.ac . Some sources show, the original 5100 offers just 802.11 b/g, some b/g/n or a/b/g/n.
Would it be so easy to change to 802.11 ac, if not installed more antennas?
How many antennas does the the 5100 card have? One?
https://www.heise.de/preisvergleich/inte...99610.html
If just a 802.11 b/g (54Mbit/s?), then a PCMCIA card like the following "MSI CB60SE" could be used (108 Mbit/s 802.11 b/g/super-g) and the mini PCIe slot could be used for the SSD as system drive?:
https://www.ebay.de/itm/MSI-CB60SE-PCMCI...SwZoZaY0iQ
or "D-Link DWL-G650" AirPlus Extreme -G
https://www.ebay.de/itm/D-Link-DWL-G650-...=929337907&hash=item1c69d61614:g:ajkAAOSwawpXreZA
or a USB solution 802.11 b/g/n
https://www.ebay.de/itm/CSL-300-Mbit-s-W...1011034550&hash=item5d50e114a9:g:4LMAAOSwVtZaHCyw

LAN:
Why does this PDF show 10/100/1000bit (1Gbit) card (on some N500 versions)?
https://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/rep_ca...8-0983.PDF
Our's N500 4233 47G does have just the 10/100bit.
Any upgrade available (and if, then just a plug&play)?
Btw, here are some details for our 47G version:
https://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/rep_ca...8-0966.PDF

SSD / HDD:
I read, that a german guy uses his system on a 60GB SSD mounted in the DVD-slot.
How fast can that be compared to a SSD at the SATA or mPCIe slot? Advantage or disadvantage?
Isn't he bus speed slower for a DVD-slot?

Cheers
Charly

It seems,

as if our model of the N500, the 4233 - 47G has the PM45 and not the GL40 chipset, so it supports also 1066MHz FSB instead of just 800 MHz.

Cheers
