T420s 1.41 whitelist removed, other changes
#1
Hi,

While trying to find something for this model all I have stumbled upon was a lot of drama concerning some individual called Oleh, who is apparently selling these mods outside of this forum, still! That's of course none of my business, but I've decided to post my own mod which was made possible based on the information from harbahabr.ru, mostly .. and from previous experience with Tiano UEFI on my Dell.

# Features include
Code:
- MSR_PMG_CST_CONFIG_CONTROL 0xE2 unlocked
- AES-NI instruction set lock removed
- RAM Speed Lock at 1333 MHz removed
- Whitelist for WWAN and WLAN cards removed
- Date/Time tab swapped with Advanced Setup tab
- Intel VBIOS updated from 2089 to 2170 with UEFI GOP support

As always, there's a Readme bundled with this mod, which tells you all the obvious things on how you must flash clean 8cuj20us (1.41) first to update the boot block and all that, and only then flash the custom firmware. An added bonus is that I have besides all the files, I have included a summary write-up in the mod_data directory with all the details on where the patches used here originated (links included) and how I came about patching this BIOS on my own. For the RAM speed unlock, I can't seem to get a proper disassembly of the SandyBridgePhx module from 1.41 on OSX, so you will have to rely on an objdump snippet taken from 1.39 instead .. yes the offsets do differ, but the premise is all the same.

# Software and files used for the mods
Code:
- UEFITool - kudos to @CodeRush
- Intel Binary Modification Program (BMP) - thanks @Ashp from providing Intel Confidential ;)
- Intel VBIOS dummy archive - courtesy of win-raid.com Forums, @SoniX in particular

Intel BMP was used to pull configuration from OEM Lenovo 2089 Intel VBIOS into 2170 dummy, the config is is included in the archive as well - snm_2089.ssf. Part of this config is the port map and setup, specific to this laptop model, so never blindly re-use it on anything else.

Find it HERE, I have my attachment quota full on this forum :\

I flashed this BIOS and it works great.
RAM speed became 1600mhz now. Thank you very much!
One thing I wanna ask you about is that can you remove computrace rom from this BIOS mod??

Thanks for the feedback.
I am not exactly sure the computrace is just an orom as there are certainly elements in the bios formbrowser that allow the computrace to be manipulated. What stops you from setting it to 'disable permanently' though, has the laptop been 'borrowed' with the software already flagged?

Because a message popup saying that "this computer is protected by computrace blah blah blah" always appears during booting and it's really annoying me.
I asked the computrace company to remove this popup message but they can't find my laptop information in their database.
Anyhow, I checked original BIOS ROM (8cuj20us) with phoenix mod tool then I found several OROMs and items (I don't know what they are exactly..) as shown as an attachment.
Just removing those items related to computrace will work?
Thanks.

Besides the pop-up, it's actually running as a service that periodically rings back to Absolute Software services and it gets a response from it, hence you still have that thing enabled. Had they wiped your asset from their DB, it would toggle itself off the very moment it has received the information the support for your machine is up.

I highly doubt it's that simple. AFAIK, ridding Computrace was always a huge mess and was never successfully done. The Intel AT (Anti Theft), yes that's easily toggle-able, Absolute cr@p - not so much.

I also wanted to express my thanks. I've been running your Mod for two months now and it's rock solid, offering a ton of value to a platform that's still remarkably competitive. Kudos, TimeWalker.

Timewalker,

It would appear that we have an update to this laptop's BIOS from Lenovo containing a security vulnerability patch, among other things. Could I prevail on you to work the magic you did here on version 1.41 with this new version 1.43? Link to the Lenovo Support page for the update here:

Lenovo Support: ThinkPad T420s BIOS 1.43 Update

Thanks again for sharing your talents so freely.

Hi Timewalker,

Lenovo updated their BIOS for T420s to version 1.44 to reflect Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities.
That BIOS is available here:
https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/8cuj22us.exe

Is there any chance you could add your BIOS changes to that release ?

Thx
