1600mhz cas-9 is the high end for the X58 chipset.  you do not need any faster. 

I suggest staying with your current memory kit.  just install it in 2xdual channel and configure timings/speed manually.  That 'compatibliity' statement just means the XMP profile was not setup for x58.  the ram is still "compatible", just not optimized for the x58.

X58 kits are usually cheap on ebay, easy to spot too because it's always 3x2GB or 3x4GB. You don't have to get X58 memory, but it may be better solution, we may be able to get stable if you'll let me help you adjust the settings I've been talking about all along.

@pir8man - Cas 9 is low end for X58 I have plenty of Cas 6 and Cas7 or 8 kits for X58. As for speed, most generally was 1600-1866 back then for top end, but there is some 2000-2133 kits too but those need special skills (Tinkering, tweaking etc) to run stable usually

From those you linked, I would try to find one of these (I check each link on G.Skill site, and QVL shows compatible with Asus X58 for these, and in general any kit 3x is designed for X58)

yes, there is faster, but testing showed that gains were minimal above 1333 cas-9. and 1600 cas-9 is considered better than optimal for this chipset.
you can get faster, the system will only show synthetic performance gains.

I had ddr-2000 on this board at one time, but I ran it at 1600mhz with tightest possible timings.  I did have it up to 1833 at one time, but this required too much voltage to the MCU, so I backed down to 1600 and optimized the timings.  It ran superb until I rebuilt/retasked my R3E system.


If you are looking to invest, upgrade your CPU to W3690. These are selling on ebay for about $75 currently. This will upgrade your MCU from stock 1066 dram support to stock 1333 dram support. It also allows for 1.5x uncore multiplier, instead of the 2x that your 950 requires. Lower uncore multiplier usually means less voltage & heat, so you can run those high end ram modules. This is the xeon equivalent to 980x. That would get you way more performance than any memory swap you do.

Synthetic benchmarks show good gains at higher speeds yes (Same for lower CAS, tWCL), not so much in real world is visible, that is true for the most part, but it does help in games and with graphics in general too.

CAS 9 is still considered low end, CAS6 or CAS7 blows CAS9 away in any benchmark at same speeds. Just look at your own comment, I had 2000Mhz CAS whatever, but I ran it at lower speed for the ideal tighter timings (Better/Lower CAS) 2000Mhz CAS 8/9/10 will loose out any day to 1600 CAS6 or CAS7, CAS 6-8 was the standard when X58 launched with CAS6 being the top tier modules and CAS8 being the now standard CAS9/10 because they don't make any high end IC's for low CAS anymore due to DDR3 production phasing down.

None of this applies to his issue though, and yes I agree, I'd rather purchase a better CPU than more memory and more memory is really not needed here either, only to optimize the timings manually for X58 instead of the X79 they were designed for @ tRFC, tFAW, tRRD)

I was not trying to get him into better timings, or more speed etc, only trying to get him stable. I only replied to your comments about dual vs triple channel, or CAS vs CAS, speeds etc in regards to our general discussion about that, nothing to do with his system or stability.

hello all x58 fans : just buildt a computer with the asus sabretooth x58 (1402) and a xenon5675, 12 gig ram, and a dead slow hdd

i would like to add a ssd to boot from, but i read that the m2 evo 970 (and others) has problems booting from this board?..is there any bios mod to fix that?

Do any of you guys know about memory problems on the x58 sabertooth boards on the latest 1402 bios ?

My board will not show the memory installed in slot B1. If i install 4gb in A1 and 4gb in B1 only the 4gb from A1 will show up in Bios and in Win10 ,however in cpuz it shows 8gb ?

I just got this board and it was already updated to bios 1402, so i cant tell if it had the same problem before

This is caused by a few things, first check CPU socket pins, if you are not sure post some images from a few angles for people to help you look.
Second can be CPU heatsink too tight, if not push-pin type. Third can be physical damage to the board, missing resistors, scratched PCB or traces etc. And finally can be settings, speed/timings/voltages, mentioned last because you only mentioned having too sticks so this shouldn't be such a big problem.

Also, be sure to check your manual for correct memory slots to use when only two sticks installed, X58 can cause problems if not using proper slots, and look at the images vs what it shows to be 100% sure you have the correct slots vs what you think they are labeled as. Sounds like you have this correct, so probably not the issue (second and forth slot from CPU for two sticks). So, check above things instead.

Thx so much for the fast reply, i just took a picture with my camera on macro, and guess what ;-)  there is one bend pin.
I will add the picture after dinner, i hope this solves the problem.

You're welcome, if I was there I'd fix for you too!

If you have good steady hands, and good eyesight, then you "may" be able to correct the pin with an empty mechanical pencil barrel or a needle. Only attempt this if you have both of the above (Good sight, and steady hands), otherwise you can easily break off the pin, pin tip, or bend/break other pins around the bent one. All that depends on how badly, and how the pin is bent.
