Phoenix Bios: Platform Signature not found in interface

I'm trying to SLIC my two Sony VAIO laptops, and both have hit a snag. When I use Phlash16 in dos to flash the file, it gives an error "Platform Signature not found in interface". The one I'm working on now is a VGN-SZ270P (which I'd eventually like to mod/have modded to unlock menus and maybe get it to see all 4GB of RAM it should be able to address, it's i945)

I've seen threads where people mentioned it and the modder somehow fixing it... but all I could find on the actual fix was something with end file locations, which upon further inspection with HxD is not the issue (both end at the same location).

So, what is the fix for this?
