Hello all

I am new to the community and BIOS modifications as a whole. I have been upgrading a number of old laptops over the past 18 months sporadically in my spare time. This particular laptop I have successfully upgraded from an Intel Celeron 540M to an Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 and replaced the HDD with an SSD and Windows 10. In HP literature this machine is limited to 2GB RAM. In reality it should be able to run 8GB according to the chipset. HP appear to have put a BIOS limitation on one memory slot as 5GB (4GB + 1GB) in the correct memory slots will boot fine unless you're installing Windows 10 where the BIOS throws up some errors.

Ideally I would be looking to bypass the memory slot limitation to install the full 8GB as a primary concern. In some cases this CPU upgrade is not fully functional as some CPU features like speedstepping are restricted in the BIOS however my C2D T9300 appears to clock down fine. I am also thinking of retrofitting higher spec features like a web cam and card reader which appear to be plug and play from a hardware perspective. Not sure what the BIOS would think of this though. Any ideas on the BIOS aspect of this would be appreciated.

This is not my daily system or something I rely on. This is purely for exploration and recreation. Although, this may have a use for someone in COVID lockdown which is why I am revisiting this now.

Chipset GL960 doesn't support SODIMM more than 1 GB in first slot. It can't be solved by BIOS patch.
But it can be replaced by GM965.

Thanks, helpful to have that confirmed. So I will have to source a system board that originally shipped with the Core 2 Duo processors which presumably has the GM965 chipset?

I have only ever soldered Christmas lights. Wink  I will keep a lookout for a suitable system board until I at least have more time to consider improving my soldering. The full 8GB RAM with optional card reader and webcam would be good but 5GB RAM will be fine until then. Thanks

I assume I will have a similar situation with our HP G5056EA. 940GML Express chipset which was upgraded from a Pentium T2080 to a C2D T7400 but won't accept a 4GB module. Other G5000/C500 models have accepted the 4GB module in one slot. It would appear these shipped with the 945GML chipset though.
