Phenom II support on EVGA 590 SLI
#31
lilliejord,

Do you have the resources to test my BIOS for this board. It is also based off the new beta BIOS but it should get rid of any "unknown CPU" stuff and give you the latest microcode patches.

I would love to test it, but its my only PC right now. I can check to see if my roommate has any compatible BIOS chips lying around, but that may be wishful thinking.

Very cool, pretty confident it will work but better safe than sorry.

Is the latest test BIOS on this thread the latest version? I have it up and running with a Phenom II 4x 970 processor which is detected properly both at POST and by the OS.

The problem I'm having though is I can't seem to get the proc to run higher than the 800Mhz - 4x multiplier which AFAICT is the lowest it will run at just under 1V.

I have disabled C&Q and tried running the proc at a higher voltage but can't seem to get past 800Mhz with a 4x multiplier (even under load CPU-Z still reports this).

Any ideas???

Thanks!

Also posting my CPU-Z numbers...

Tried resetting CMOS and running with default config (and then also disabling C1E and C&Q). I have also tried increasing the CPU voltage but I'm stuck at a 4x multiplier for some reason.

Is my understanding correct that with C&Q disabled the proc should just run at full speed? And also the reason I'm not seeing the CPU multiplier config in the bios is because it was missing from the original EVGA Beta BIOS?

Here are my specs:

EVGA 590 SLI AMD
AMD Phenom II X4 970 AM3 125W
G.SKILL DDR2 800
GEFORCE 8800GTS
OCZ 700W PSU
Zalman 9500 Cooling Fan

Previously had an Athlon 64 X2 5200+ AM2 89W in there...

Thanks for any advice - I have tried the original mod that had the "AMD Unknown Processor" and the latest from TheWiz that correctly identifies the procs....

One more post with more info... =)

Attached are HW Monitor outputs as well as CPU-Z with voltage increased to 1.25 (up from the 0.98 its defaulting to) and an increase of the bus speed from 202 to 250. That gets me up to 1Ghz but still quite far from the 3.5Ghz the proc is able to do. =)

One thing I noticed in HWMonitor is that it shows the proc drawing only 46W... It seems like the BIOS might not be doing the right thing even though it properly detects the proc as an x4 970? I'm not sure why else it wouldn't be getting the right wattage? I'm just guessing at this point though as it seems like I've tried everything. =)

I think the folks who did previously get this BIOS working on this thread were running the 125W 940... Seems pretty darn close in spec though (x4 3.0 Ghz 125W vs x4 3.5Ghz 125W).

Thanks and apologies for the multi posting!

Anyone have any ideas? @TheWiz - any suggestions on any debugging or troubleshooting I could try with the test bios?

Anyone else able to get this working with an AM3 proc? (Looks like previous posters were all running AM2+).

Thanks!!

Wiz: Tried this bios and it bricked my board. No boot. Luckily was able to hot flash on a different board and recover from the bad flash. Here is what I have done so far:

1. Bios 612W2P36 (Post #11) - works perfectly Wink
2. Wiz Bios (This post) with nccpucode and AGESACPU update BRICKS the board Sad
3. I started with 612W2P36 bios, removed AWDFLASH, updated ROMs (Nvidia MediaShield 9.85), NCCPUCODE and AGESACPU using cbrom195 and BRICKED the board again Big Grin
4. Started with 612W2P36 bios, this time just updated NCCPUCODE and AGESACPU using cbrom195 and BRICKED the board AGAIN Big Grin

So, looks like there is some special byte that needs to be changed manually or cbrom195 corrupts the bios. Also MINIT sensitive module offset should not change (may be possible manually)

Wiz: Hope this gives you enough information to rework your test bios. Looks like a manual update is needed.
