Pegatron M2N68-LA/HP Ivy8-GL6: CPU Upgrade
#11
I think I found the corresponding board and updated bios that now supports X6 cpu's

No that can't be right, the Gigabyte BIOS link posted is an AMD 785 chipset, and this is an nforce 430 MCP61. Judging by the BIOS structure of the HP I do not think its going to be able to handle X6 with any kind of update. The only chance you would have in this case is if you were able to test the ASUS BIOS version of this board.

Anyways, you asked what's the max you can get out of this board. Definitely your best RAN option is here:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6820231122

And if your CPU is a regular X2 its probably not worth touching that.

Now, we also should look at the Asus M2N68-LA (Narra3) (Another similar HP board)

The BIOS for this board DOES support Phenom II and would work well. The question again becomes doing detailed comparisons and seeing if its worth testing.

Thanks,
TheWiz

nice, I'll have to get that ram, does it matter which phenom II ? could I get any X4 or X6 phenom II?
Thanks

Is there any good documentation available to hack this myself? Or is there someone working on this?

I just upgraded my compaq which uses the IVY8 (m2n68-LA board with the attached 5.14 bios.
Slic is still at 2.0 though if I am not mistaken.
So please use the new bios for modding it will help alot.

Also the board is thermal design limited and is best to use an 95w or less thermal design cpu.

Smile

TheWiz has already posted that its looks highly unlikely that this board will take X6's

Hey 1234s282 or TheWiz,

Thanks for the great site. I'm encouraged by the possibility of adding support for a better processor for my IVY8-GL6 motherboard. I have a few questions:

1. Is it "safe" to use the BIOS posted by 1234s282 from a year ago? I realize there is some risk, but it also sounds like you guys have improved the modding process since then. Is the BIOS posted by shademage (above) "safe"? Is he affiliated with you?

2. Can you look at doing the latest BIOS for this board (Ivy514, attached)? If you do, would you consider using the BIOS from the Asus M2NPV-VM (1401, also attached)? It appears to be a closer match to the board in the thread title than the M2N68-AM suggested by the OP. The chipset is a closer match, and the VRMs look similar as well.

3. Can you tell what version of AwardFlash is needed? Do you have a suggestion on where to get it or should I just pull it from some mobo website? I would rather not use WinFlash if possible.

.bin   Ivy514.BIN (Size: 512 KB / Downloads: 32)

.bin   1401.BIN (Size: 512 KB / Downloads: 13)

Thanks!
Flapjack

Heres your mod , try it at your own risk as this is still relatively new to us!

I hope I'm not being a pest, but I have one more question. The modded BIOS file that 1234s282 provided in the link above has a .ROM extension, while the BIOS file from HP is a .BIN. Should I just rename the extension?

Thanks!
Flapjack

Edit: Okay, so when I run it as a .ROM or .BIN using WinFlash, I get a checksum error. Am I maybe doing something wrong?

Hey guys,

Just wanted to let you know that the latest BIOS from HP (5.14) for this motherboard supports a Brisbane 5600+, which is what I was looking for. This is a little misleading because the HP website says that it only supports up to a 4800+ (65W TDP). My guess is they added support for all 65W TDP AM2 procs with their last BIOS release, but never updated the documentation. That will teach me to try the mfgr BIOS before looking for something exotic. Rolleyes
