Gateway FX6800 (TBGM01)
#71
Here is the third and final screen: [Image: FlashDriveIII.png] After this, it should be ready to boot and Flash. Before I added the Flash Utiltiy, I did boot to the Flash Drive and got the Windows 98 Splash Screen to check things. I had added the Bios.Rom files though. I should be ready to go at this point.
Ok. I ran the thing and got an error message. I wasn't sure of to enter the command and got it wrong as i spaced everything. The next time, I only has space between afudos and bios.rom. This time I get a message saying it was unable to read the file. Oh well, at least it didn't brick my motherboard. My i7 960 is here, so guess I'll work on that instead. At least I'll get a little boost that doesn't require messing with the BiOS. Might go back in there after I install the processor and see what's what. Not a whole lot to look at, but might see something. Gonna drop the 1600 Mhz ram that is in here and either put in 6 Gb of 1333 Mhz or 9 Gb of 1066 Mhz. I believe this is one of those things, that the more you mess with it, the worse things get, so will quite while I'm ahead.

First, It appears that Gateway has updated the BiOS since this version. Last update was in July '10 for some kind of S2 issue. http://support.gateway.com/us/en/product...aspx?tab=1

When running the flash, all I get is an error about not being able to read the files ( at least it didn't brick my MOBO ). Just moved up from the i7 920 that was in here to the i7 960. QPI is still at 4.8 and max memory is still at 1066 MHz. Looks like I'll have to live with that, but will go ahead and flash the Gateway Update.

Here is what I see ( sorry about the poor quality Pictue. It is a new Camera and I stil need some work with it:

Ok. I tried twice more and The first time got "Unknown Command" and the second time "Bad Command Line". I have decide to put an end to this project as I have spent a lot of time and gotten no where. As it is, I suddenly find myself unable to get the latest BiOS Update from Gateway ( Jul. '10 ). I do need to go in here and change out the memory. I was running 1600 Mhz, then dropped back to 1333 Mhz. I have a matched Tri Channel set of 1066 Mhz that is the proper memory for this thing. think that other memory has been causing some problems as it isn't what this thing is designed to run ( The memory controller is locked at 1066 MHz ). I'll be watching to see if someone is sucessful with this.

Okay guys I have a Gateway FX6800-03h and I want try this out.
But first I'm wondering if I can get a complete list of things that I need to read before I start this thing because I do not really want to brick my Motherboard.

Okay UPDATE::
I did flash it.
It worked.
1 Problem I don't see where I can adjust the frequency in the frequency tab.
I can adjust the 20 thingy, but 20 is the max. Is there a option that I'm missing?

Hi, The multiplier is supposedly locked at 20, but I ran the Intel Processor I.D Utility and it was showing a freqency of 2.8 Ghz. I then ran CPU-Z and it conformed the speed at 2.8 GHz with the Multitiplier at 21. A 21 Multiplier is consistant with the 2.8 GHz Processor speed. I have since upgraded the processor to the 960. That is showing a Multplier of x25 and the speed at 3.33 GHz. I was never able to run that thing and gave up before I bricked my MOBO. I think you need t go another way with it such as adjusting the bclck, but not sure, as I never had a chance to mess with it.

The 21 multiplier is with turbo boost. Turbo boost changes the CPU clock ratio by 1 mulitplied by the base clock.

So what your seeing is just stock speeds with turbo enabled or just always on. If you're still running a previous BIOS I don't think you have the option to even correctly use turbo boost. In the previous bios there was no option to enable it and no option to turn on EIST. Therefore, it was just always on. This is how it was when I first received this computer running Vista, it was always running at max speed like what you're seeing..

The 920 processor has two bins or two turbo modes:

Base/Stock 20x133 = 2660mhz (2.66ghz)

1st Turbo (4 cores) 21x133 = 2793mhz (2.8ghz)

2nd Turbo (1core/single thread) 22x133 = 2926mhz (2.93ghz)

You should remember that it is multiplied by the base clock, so when overclocking I think it would be best to just leave it on and when you stress test for stability it will run in turbo mode which should tell you that it will be stable all the way up to turbo. Unless you turn it off, then If you turn off turbo, EIST, etc... the multiplier will not go above 20x on this board.

As far as overclocking goes on this board, I am running the modded bios from the other thread here but there are still no options to OC, but there are more options that are needed in the Frequency/Voltage section. It does have options to force the QPI to 6.4 and to force the RAM to run at 1333, but they do not work or there is no change. Only way to OC as of now with this board is to use Setfsb to raise the fsb. I was able to get mine to 156.

You should get the Turbo boost monitor from intel to see the turbo boost yourself: http://www.intel.com/support/processors/...031038.htm

Hi Maybe you'll find this helpful. It is a lot of information and possibly a bit "Techie" though.

But if anyone is wanting to OC with the stock hardware, the only way so far that I am aware of is to use Setfsb to increase the fsb.

I was just trying to give a simple short explanation as to why you were seeing the multiplier of 21. It didn't seem like you knew where that multiplier was coming from... do you have speedstep enabled?

$300 for the 960 over the 920 is not really worth it IMO... you will probably not even notice the difference without any software or other benchmarking tools telling you it's better.

I have the latest version of the BiOS ( A04-B0 , I think ). It was the one to enable Turbo Boost on the MOBO. Yeah, the multiplier is showing at x25 in CPU-Z. You are right, you can't adjust the multiplier on those things. You need to work with some other factors, which in turn will get your Memory speed as well as the QPI up. I'm not sure of all of the details. We have a couple of OC aces over on the forum I moderate that are all over that stuff. I never flashed the BiOS in here. I tried but it didn't work and after a couple more tries, decided to leave it alone ( don't need a 30+ Lb. paperweight ). I have noticed some difference, but it may be more memory related than CPU. I had been running 1600 MHz ram, then dropped back to 1333 MHz. There had been some small things that kept cropping up of an unstable nature. I finally installed a 6 gb kit of 1066 Mhz and it has been rock solid ( it came with 3 Gb of 1333 Mhz ). You are right about the benchmarking. It is nothing but numbers telling you things are running great or better than it was before what ever upgrade you may have made. I don't think you see the boost in performance in day to day stuff. If you are running intensive Video editing stuff, then you would probably notice.
