OptiPlex GX620 memory mapping
#1
Hello everyone, 1st post.

I'm looking for a bios mod for the Dell OptiPlex GX620 to remove memory mapping all together. Regardless of my graphics card, the bios reserves 512mb of RAM and then another 256mb of RAM per GPU. Right now I'm running Windows 7 x64 and the removal of this memory mapping would help boost the performance of my pc greatly as there is a glitch (or something) going on in my pc where it can support 8gb of ram (I've seen it in bios and will be more than happy to send a picture to whomever doesn't believe me) even though this machine is ONLY supposed to report 4gb max! Typically Windows 7 won't boot unless I change the max memory in the boot.ini, but that's a conversation for another time. I make note of this 8gb RAM support because I believe it has something to do with the bios as they are now and would like to preserve it. Each bay can see a 2gb DDR2 stick and it can exceed the 4gb its allowed to support. Any help with this would be very very much appreciated and would have solved a year old problem for me!

Also Core 2 Duo support would be very nice Big Grin

Thank you.

I`M sorry but your exe file can`t be decompressed to extract the bios file .
usually the exe files extracted with 7z or universal extractor or it extracted it self to a temp folder .........but your exe file can`t be accessed .

try finding the bios file ( bios.wph ) by searching google .

Dell OptiPlex GX620 use Dell BIOS. It's not really Phoenix BIOS.

How to extract Dell BIOS:-
Code:
XXXXXXX.EXE /writehdrfile
or
XXXXXXX.EXE /writeromfile

If you use my modified BIOS image & you like it, please consider making a donation. Thank you very much. Smile

GX620 isn't based on Intel 945 chipset?
This chipset max RAM is 4GB.
BIOS may identify all inserted RAM modules but usable will be what is left from 4GB after BIOS allocate required system resources.

Hence why I want memory mapping turned off or a bios mod that will allow me to use all 8GB. It would be a whole different issue if the machine refused to recognize it but it does. Windows 7 does give me a blue screen when booting into it with more than 4GB of ram but with a small change in the configuration it boots just fine and shows it in the system properties Big Grin

Its just not all usable >Sad

I don't think any BIOS mod will do that.
4GB is max support for 945 chipset.

Just for curiosity,
What change in configuration and some details about

Windows can detect and report all RAM by SPD info or other parameters at boot? But usable? How much?
Under 4GB?

Windows knows there is more than 4GB of ram in the machine, the bios shows the exact ram amount as well. But like I said its not all usable. It will say something like 6GB RAM (3.5GB usable) in the systems properties page. So for whatever reason my 945 chipset can not only see the ram, but boot into windows with it installed and windows can detect it. I had a feeling there would be skeptics about the whole thing which is why I've tried being specific in the issue. I believe that by disabling memory mapping, it will let me use all 8GB of ram I can have installed in the machine since regardless of hardware configuration or graphics card(s) that I have installed, it will always reserve everything over 3.5GB for its self. As far as edits go, there were none. I was just bored one day and through in 2 more 2GB modules in the machine (while there was already 2x2GB modules installed prior) and the bios didn't give me the memory error code or beeping noise. It showed me the splash screen, I entered the bios set up and there it was, 8GB of RAM detected. It even boots into windows without giving me an error code! So I don't know how or why, but I know that it is possible for this chipset to support more than 4GB.
