I don't know whether this is the case, but I think it's possible that there are some strings in the 580m VBIOS which are required for proper 3d support... in this case a BIOS mod wouldn't allow the 485m to use 3d, it'd also require a VBIOS mod.
Fist you need to unpack all the .rom modules of the .FD files, then you can start using a hex editor if you're that skilled.

. I don't know if it's the GPU or the screen to be patched because when I plug another screen, the other screen can have 3D but still not the alienware screen. ( Monitor Name: LG Philips [Unknown Model: LGD02C5] if it might help you)
