Acer Aspire 5535 Bios unlocking
#11
I reckon if I do end up upgrading the cpu it would be the ZM-86 (~£50 used), maybe the 87 (~£75 used) Dunno if 400Mhz faster hypertransport is worth £25. Its not exactly a high-end laptop to start with so I think, even if it worked the ZM-88 would be too expensive to justify.

Would upgrading to a ZM-87 even work?

You can definitely get Aspire 5535s with ZM-82s, would the extra 400Mhz HT speed and 400MHZ cpu speed of the ZM-87 matter to cooling?

The Mobo's M780G supports Hypertransport 3 max speed 2.6Ghz. (ZM-87 = 2.2Ghz HT), (ZM-86 = 1.8Ghz HT) so there should be no problems in that department.

The ZM-87 hase Dual-channel 400 MHz, the QL-60 I have at the minute is 333 Mhz, the mobos FSB is rated at 667 as you know, so I reckon there would be no point upgrading to 800Mhz ram as it would just under-clock to 667 anyway, unless that can be changed with a fixed BIOS Wink

The core voltages are only slightly different: QL-60 = 1.075v - 1.125v ZM-86 = 1.1v - 1.125v
The proc family would be changing from Athlon to a Turion but I don't believe the proc technology will matter in terms of compatibility to my system.
Turions apparently run cooler and use less energy than Athlons and both are 35W TDP.
But I'd assume the higher clock, faster speed, higher temp... nts what to do. Its a relatively cheap upgrade, stick in another gig of ram (better if it could run at 800Mhz) get an improved processor for under £100.

I was given the laptop as scrap for spares, but I replaced the power socket and adapter and got it going Smile I hope I haven't jinxed it by thinking about upgrading ^_^

The problem is with the heatsink my friend, they used a very small inefficient one.
Pick a cpu that wont extract more heat that it can handle.
I would recommend to you to replace the fan with a more efficient one if you want to last and use a 1mm copper shrim between the chipset and the heatsink, replacing the sh..tty thermal pad acer used, be sure cpu is getting some love when using the shrim and use a proper thermal paste like tx4,mx4 and a rice blob not more.

Here is the unlocked bios :-

.rar   mod.rar (Size: 567.98 KB / Downloads: 296)

as i told in my previous post that this bios has few options to unlock unlike the other phoenix bioses .
you can check the original bios using PBE and see all options in the strings and you will find few options i have unlocked .
try it and im waiting your reply .

Hi guys, I've been trying to flash the bios with the modded version provided on this thread :

http://www.bios-mods.com/forum/attachment.php?aid=3309

The phlash16.exe file provided does not work during desktop and in dos mode. In the desktop, an error comes up saying something about memory management.

I tried the acer bios update utility, but that comes up with an error refusing to flash to a new bios version (the mod version).

Have also tried leveno bios update utility, that didn't work. So yeah.

My laptop is the Aver 5535. Current is amd athlon ql-60. I want to replace it with the turion II 2.4 ghz zm87 (i think).

With the default bios, the laptop does not POST with the turion cpu, hence the reason why I would like to use the mod bios.

Thanks.
