chipset memory controller
#1
Have a Intel 945pm chipset, bios shows 4gb ram, Windows (32 or 64bit) shows 4gb ram 3gb usable, apparently this is because the chipset controller is 32bit and can only use 3gb, is this the case? and if so is a "chipset controller" an option rom that can be changed or is this just something I need to live with?

"Mobile Intel® 945PM Express Chipset with 82801GBM I/O Controller Hub (ICH7M)" <-- thats the controller I think.

This 3 Gigabyte cap is a part of most the Windows 32 bit systems. You could remove that cap by installing Lynux, Windows 64 bit O/S, Windows Server, or right you are, have to live with it.

running 64bit, it seems that its 3gb on my setup but other manufacturers that use the same board get 3.25 or 3.75gb, tried it with a couple of graphics card now so I'm sure its not reserved graphics memory.

Check for memory remap option in your BIOS/chipset datasheet. That should be the problem. Address range 3.5-4.0 is reserved for PCI while the controller isn't able to remap this memory range in address range over 4G (4.0-4.5 for example). I'm just digging the same thing on Eee PC 1201N.

Try this one for 32-bit system. Since chipset doesn't support memory remap, 64-bit OS is not a solution.

thanks, are you saying that there is no bios mod for the memory issue?

data sheet;

(no biggy really as I just bought the board so I could use a wif combo card) but out of curiosity how come an Aser laptop of exact board,cpu,graphics card can show 3.25 or 3.75gb while the Toshiba shows just 3gb?

Edit; any idea why the memory shows as this;

yet its 667 (both sticks)?

I'm just trying to tell that you need the memory remap feature. I think it's the way the Acer works.

Because 667 is the effective frequency (calculated as real frequency, 333 multiplied by 2 because of DDR technology). So 333MHz memory is DDR667, in your case DDR2-667.

I see the work-around is the P-A-E used by Windows Server. I hadn't heard of it before now and about time someone worked it out; thats in my link.

PAE can be enabled in Win XP/Vista/7 too. It's just a bit more complicated.
