Asus Rampage III GENE Request - Full Overhaul
#1
Brick
Hello, first time poster but lurking a few weeks. Hopefully I get this right.

Manufacturer: ASUSTeK Computer Inc
Model: ASUS Rampage III GENE
Chipset: Intel X58/ICH10R
Bios Type : AMI
Bios: RampageIII-GENE-ASUS-1003.ROM

Requests:
SLIC 2.1
Intel OROM update
Marvell OROM/FW update

OROMS:
Intel -
Update to 11.0.0.1339

Marvell -
From my understanding there's 3 parts to this OROM. Per StationDrivers (Here), the 3 parts are 1.0.0.1701 / 2.2.0.1118 / 1.0.0.1029.
And from what I read 1029 is the option rom, 1118 is the firmware? Anyway...
>Source -
1.0.0.1701 / 2.2.0.1118 / 1.0.0.1029
>Update to -
1.0.0.1701 / 2.2.0.1125 / 1.0.0.1029
>Then shove it all into the BIOS

Hopefully all files are below. Thanks!

SLIC: ASUS 2.1
SLP: ASUS
Cert: ASUS
Modded with AMI SLIC Mod 1.62
Mod method: SSV3/MMTool

OROMS Updated:
Intel RAID - 11.0.0.1339
Marvel RAID - 1.0.0.1029 (Newest OROM Available)

Flash from DOS with Included Flash Utility.

2.2.0.1125 is the version of the Firmware that is used to Flash an Separate Marvell 91xx Chip, Not the ORom Version number.
1.0.0.1701 is the Driver Version I beleive (which you install in Windows).
1.0.0.1029 is the ORom Version that can be Updated in the BIOS (original version in that BIOS was 1.0.0.1019).

Hmm. I checked directly in the Option ROM setup (where I create the volumes @ boot) and the current Marvell info read as:

BIOS - 1.0.0.1029 (so that's good, was updated via BIOS by a fellow XS member)
FW - 2.2.0.1113

And here's a shot of the board. Is this what you meant by separate?
(borrowed)

Oh and you're right about the driver. My bad!
*2nd edit* I see what you're saying now. Did some more research and the 2.2.0.1125 is for a PCI-X ADD-IN card that uses the 91XX chip. OK, so we're good then. Thanks for the help, I'll let you know how it goes!

Bad news. Not sure if the issue is with my C300 SSD or the Marvell controller, but something is borked. I'm still diagnosing it, but for now if anyone else uses this BIOS make sure not to have any drives connected to the Marvell controller.

Every Test I have Read states that the Marvel 9128 6 GB/s Controller Does Not work as well as the Intel ICH10R 3 GB/s Controller, in RAID or AHCI Mode.
And apparently the CS300 Doesn't work well on that Marvell Controller.
So I wouldn't recommend using it anyways.
Read these:

etc, etc.

It was working just fine for going on a year now. Originally there was some incompatibility and I couldn't get the drive to work right on the controller. The MrToad BIOS (found on the boards here too) fixed the issue that the C300 was having with the Marvell controller. While I'm sure it wasn't pushing the bleeding edge of speed, it tested well enough.

I'm going to try and clear the CMOS and recover the BIOS, just been busy though.

Might have found the issue. Before, when booting into the Marvell ROM the following info showed:

BIOS - 1.0.0.1029
FW - 2.2.0.1113

Now it reads:

BIOS - 1.0.0.1029
FW - 2.1.0.1413

So the FW for the controller has actually been revered to a much earlier version. I think I can fix it but I don't want to mess around with the Marvell controller anymore since I had it "fixed" before. Also, according to the guys over @ Station Drivers, there are people that have updated their 9123 chip with the new firmware and in the compatibility list the 9123 is listed:
http://www.station-drivers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=3567

Also I noticed here you told these chaps that the original changes I requested with the Marvell update WERE compatible, but you're saying it's not now? I'm confused Sad http://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-Re...ell-Update

This is the BIOS with the firmware that was working last, can you compare it to the modifications you did? Apparently it was modified in MMTool and editing something called the "E6 and E7 files"

Thanks for your help!

In that Other thread I said:
The Marvell 1.0.0.1029 OROM is Compatible with BOTH the Marvell 9123 and Marvell 9128 Chips.
And it is !!!!!
This MB has a 9128 Chip:
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_S...ifications

The Links I posted Above are people Saying that your Specific Crucial CS300 SSD in NOT compatible with that Controller.

It sounds like you need to flash your Marvel Chip and your SSD with the Newest Firmware, and see if that helps.

That 0805b BIOS has Marvell ORom Version (1.0.0.1029) in it same as the one I used.

The C300 IS compatible though. I promise I'm not trying to create strife, but it's been working for going on a year now.
I've been learning all this very quickly in an effort to rectify the situation. The data I was able to pull from the Marvell OROMS shows that the new firmware release (2.2.0.1125) is compatible with the 9123, and there was someone over @ Station Drivers that was able to get it loaded. Unfortunately I'm not proficient enough after 6 hours with Hex Workshop to pull the necessary information from either the newest package or the one before it.

Apparently it's a 3 part package that you have to insert into the main BIOS update (module ID E6, E7; then 20 in RunLoc 1B4B:9123) Some guy over at SD was able to "split" the Marvell OROM update into the 3 necessary parts but I have no idea how to do that:
http://www.station-drivers.com/forum/vie...467#p10432

What I was able to do is take your modded BIOS and flash the Marvell parts back to the "old" working OROM chip FW and BIOS (for anyone else reading this that's catching up, the Marvell chip apparently has its own BIOS of sorts). So now the complete BIOS is as follows:

Asus Rampage III Gene:
BIOS - 1003

SATA Controller OROMS:
Intel - 11.0.0.1339
Marvell - 2.2.0.1113 (FW) / 1.0.0.1029 (BIOS)

100% working and my computer is back up, but the Marvell OROM is not the "latest and greatest."

.rom   IR11_SLC.ROM (Size: 2 MB / Downloads: 25)

Just figured it out, I think.
Marvell AHCI and IDE FW (the two separate parts, I'm thinking the E6 and E7 values) - 2.2.0.1125
Marvell BIOS - 1.0.0.1033

Someone correct me if this is wrong? Sort of thinking out loud here...

I have NO Idea where you got version 1.0.0.1033 Orom from, I don't have it and I haven't seen it anywhere.
As for the Marvell 2.2.0.1125 FW,
It does contain two parts but I have seen people state the simply Flashing the AHCI version works perfectly for them with an on-board Marvell 9128.
The OROM is NOT in two parts though, it is one single .bin file.
Just like they state in the thread you linked to earlier:
http://www.station-drivers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=3567

That is NOT the same MB in that thread post as this one.
http://www.station-drivers.com/forum/vie...467#p10432
Success - Asus P6X58D-E (NOT Rampage III GENE).
But by all means feel free to try replacing your E6.BIN and E7.Bin with his Gigabyte e6.bin and e7.bin in your BIOS.
You can do that with MMTool.

Since you have the Hardware in question and I do NOT, there is NO way for me to test this.
On my Gigabye MB, I made a Bootable USB Drive copied the Marvel Firmware to it and typed Go.bat to Flash the Marvell 9128 chip to FW Version 1.0.0.1701, I have NOT updated it to v2.2.0.1025 because I have no reason to.

PS
That IR11_SLC.ROM BIOS you posted above has the EXACT Same Marvell Orom as I added, v1.0.0.1029, NOT 1.0.0.1033.
