HP MCP61PM-HM (Nettle2) 5.27 With Unlocked Overclocking Options
#41
still no affected changes im using cpu z to check my changes is i t the program that doesnt recognize it or something ?
I booted pc, went to bios changed settings, did save settings and exit, let pc reboot, then shut it down, pulled the plug for some time, and rebooted. still no changed, isnt that the correct order ?

Try downloading "s.i.w." standalone version and see what it tells you about cpu speed. Allthough I don't see why cpuz would be incorrect. Also right click "my computer" and select properties and see what it is saying for cpu speed.

Hey,

I'm new to the forum, I've been looking into upgrading and getting the most out of an old HP Pavillion (a6140.nl) that has A Nettle2 Motherboard. Due to it being a rather old mb and part of a prebuilt system purchase I wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised with this thread =).

I've replaced the old X2 4400+ 2,3 GHz (65 W) processor with a new X2 5200+ 2,7 Ghz (65 W), and ditched the old 2x512MB PC2-5300 for some OCZ 2x2Gb PC2-6400 RAM.

I'm looking to try flashing the bios and try some overclocking, however, I noticed the modded bios you posted is based on the latest 5.27 from HP that states it requires Vista as an OS. Would this be any problem if still using XP? (Sorry if it's a stupid question ^_^).

A bit off subject, would this motherboard be able to handle a GeForce 260GTX or ATI 5770? (granted with a new ~550W PSU). I'll be taking most the upgrade bits with me once I settle on a new pc, motherboard, casing etc but for now trying to milk the existing system for what it's worth.

Thanks!

Hey,

It doesn't matter what OS you use, as I have booted multiple oses on the nettle2 board. I upgraded my case to a 550w silencer last year and put an ati 4850 and it runs without a hitch.

Just to clarify on which O.S. , as long as you do the bios update from dos with a bootable flash drive it doesn't matter if you have xp or vista etc. To do the flash within windows (not recommended) vista must me used. You shouldn't have any problems upgrading to the modded bios but from experience with this pc when overclocking and adding a performance video card cooling becomes a major issue as the airflow in these cases are far from adequate. I have managed to get reasonable airflow by modding the case and adding 2 120mm fans and lapping the cpu heatsink but it is just enough to keep it stable. So keep an eye on your temps.

My ATI 4850 has good temps, roughly 65 at idle, but single slotted is the key for airflow in the gpu.

Also Gabe, did you figure out if you have the resources to become a tester for the next mod release?

Well I did dig through my seemingly endless collection of computers and parts and I have a working board that has the same bios socket, though the chip is not the exact one as the nettle 2. But if This will work then sure lets do it.

Thanks for the replies.

I'll flash the bios from dos sometime this week then.

I think I'll lean towards the Radeon 5770 since it runs significantly cooler, will have to look at improving airflow in the casing anyhow as I think the single rear fan won't cut it once I'm done with the upgrades, was looking at something like this.

I slapped a cheap Alpine 64 Pro cooling fan on the cpu, it says its good for up to 90 w. Was hoping it would be enough to OC the 2,7Ghz 65w cpu to as close to 3,0Ghz as I can get it - or would I need to be looking at something a little more serious?

OK folks, I have succesfully cracked the AMD microcode and will now make a TEST BUILD. Please only test if you have the resources to do so.

Here's the breakdown: This first should have all the microcode for the AM3 CPU's to date. because this bios is only 512K though, I wasn't able to update MEMinit.bin. so, while you can still try this one: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1525839/Bios/527MODcpu.bin , I have a better solution below.

This version has all the microcode and agesa patches from the next version of this board, which is the Nettle3. this means that support for all the dual cores and first gen Phenoms should be in here. Please note that the nettle2 is ONLY CAPABLE OF A MAX CPU TDP OF 89W, so you should have a CPU under 89W (which the phenoms do come in 65W., but lets test this stuff first, shall we?)

So Here's the one that adds the support from Nettle3 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1525839/Bios/527MOD%28N%29.bin

After looking things over, either one looks really good, so if you have the means to test, there you are. Be sure to rename to bios.bin on flash.

I have a nettle2 and I upgraded my cpu to an Athlon 64 x2 5600+ 2.9GHZ and my ram to 4GB of DDR2 800MHz. I got the bios flashed and it was up and running. I began increasing the cpu freq and got it up to 250MHz, with the HTT set at 4x and i set the mem max to 800MHz. It started up and I restarted it and then shut it down. unplugged it and waited about a minute or so and turned it back on. It doesn't even get to the bios now. The fans turn on and the power light, and hdd light blinks once or twice and then it just sits there. I cleared the cmos by moving the jumper but it still does the same thing. Any ideas on how to fix this?
my first thought was that i may have fried my cpu so I put my old one back in and it did the same thing, but I noticed that the power light blinked at me. I decided to just let it run and see if is does anything. and it didSmile My tv just said no signal and then when something came up it was the windows loading screen. I never actually saw the bios screen. I'll play around with it and see what I can find on my own though.
