Enable NX/XD on Dell Dimension 4600
#1
If you go over to the Dell support forums a lot of people are looking for an updated BIOS for the Dell Dimension 4600 which allows enabling the NX/XD feature. Many people like me have a CPU which has this feature, but no option in any of the Dell supplied BIOS's to turn it on. Without this option turned on you can't install Windows 8.

If someone could come up with a modded BIOS that allows this there would be many happy customers for it.

I'm prepared to have a go myself but don't know how hard it would be, or even if it is possible. Comments on feasibility and degree of difficulty would be welcome.

BTW someone on the Dell forums has claimed success in loading the Dimension 4700 BIOS onto a 4600 and thereby getting the option to enable NX. But I am reluctant to try this since the motherboards on the 4600 and 4700 are very different - one uses the Intel 865 chipset and the other uses the Intel 916G chipset. Am I right to be sceptical this is a good idea?

Thanks in advance for any constructive help. But there will be no thanks at all for the tip to get a new computer!

I haven't found a way either...just a way to get HT and the unsupported CPU's to not display the error anymore...see the same dell forum as I replied
