Yeah big thanks to Lecky for the BIOS, works a treat, gone from a slow celeron 1.6ghz to a good 2.12ghz. Smile

Gogo - you need to go into the BIOS and change the CPU frequency from 200 to 266.

Thanks for this mod. It flashed smoothly under windows xp home sp3.

I was wondering if I could use PC6400 RAM since ACER specifies M1610 is limited to 400/533/667 Mhz RAM. Well, you can use PC6400 (800 Mhz) after flashing the BIOS. You just have to set it up manually otherwise it will select 533 Mhz speed.

Here are the benchmark before / after upgrade

CPU speed RAM MaxxMem2 Benchmark
1.8 Ghz (200/100/33) 1Go PC5300 C: 2400 R: 2999 W: 2833 L: 139.1 ns
1.8 Ghz (200/100/33) 2Go PC6400 C: 2820 R: 3064 W: 2897 L: 129.1 ns
2.4 Ghz (266/100/33) 1Go PC5300 C: 2676 R: 3259 W: 3087 L: 126.4 ns
2.4 Ghz (266/100/33) 2Go PC6400 C: 3212 R: 3788 W: 3675 L: 113.2 ns

So it's an increase at best of 2400 to 3212 Mo/s (memory copy) + 33% as we could expect.

CPU benchmark using CPUFree Banchmark 37,84 s/ cycle to 28,37 s/ cycle

It was worth spending this morning + 25 euros.

WARNING:

I used the config 266/100/33 + DRAM at 800 Mhz one day, playing games. I had 2-3 freezes but it didn't even quit game (stracraft II). The day after the computer broke down after about 15 minutes.

It seems my 500W power supply was not enough. I had replaced the original 250W power supply 15 months ago because I integrated a GEFORCE 8800 GTS card that pumps quite a lot. The CPU din't heat (still 23° c!) and I hope nothing else than the power supply has burned.

Here are the steps I took in order to overclock my acer M1610 /1.8Ghz and avoid a crash.

Since the motherboard specs only considers 400/533/667 Mhz DRAM frequency, I didn't use the 800 Mhz option available with the BIOS mods. Instead I used PC6400 RAM (800 Mhz) with a decreased CAS latency (5-->4). Here is what I did

* Plug my computer into a protected plug against high voltage, since I suspect the broke down of my machine may have been triggered by AC poor quality (we have nuclear AC here).

* changed the 500W power supply of the PC for a high-end 460W power supply.

* kept DRAM frequency at 667 Mhz, but used PC6400 5-5-5 (800 Mhz RAM) and forced the BIOS to use CAS 4 instead of CAS 5 or auto mode.

* according to an internet site I disabled CE1 function and spread spectrum in the BIOS.

======
BIOS setup:

Advanced bios features / CPU features / CE1 function: auto -> disabled

Advanced bios features / DRAM clock/Timing Control/ Frequency : 667Mhz -> unchanged
Advanced bios features / DRAM clock/Timing Control/ DDR2 CAS latency : auto (5T) -> 4T

PC Health status / CPU Warning Temp: 70°c -> 60°c
PC Health status / CPU Shutdown Temp: 90°c -> 80°c
PC Health status / SYS Shutdown Temp: 70°c -> 65°c

Frequency Voltage Control / Spread spectrum: enabled -> disabled
Frequency Voltage Control / CPU Host/PCIEX/PCI: 200/100/33 -> 266/100/33

=======
The benchmarks are now

2.4 Ghz (266/100/33) 2Go PC6400@667-CAS4 C: 3261 R: 3982 W: 4123 L: 118,8 ns

Perf CPU Free Banchmark: 28,4 s.

This configuration brings a perf increase of about 36% (memory copy) as compared to the original configuration and I hope it is safe. It is even better than when using PC6400@800-CAS5 !

I did a 8 hours stress test Ok. Temp monitoring shows a peak temp of about 57°c. Average temp around 50°c. It is borderline. The computer is running ok since a month.
