[Support Request] Acer 5750G Fan Settings
#1
It's not a Unlock Request, but I really don't know where to post it. As 5750g owners know, Fan option in unlocked bios doesn't really work, because from what I understand searching around the web fan speed is regulated by EC, and not by bios. The service manual reports that fan spins to its full speed (4000 rpm) at 100 °C. I don't know why Acer did such a dumb move, because imho 100° is a temp too much high for full fan spinning (actually it's the TJ max for most 2nd generation Intel cpus). So I've tried to find a way to modify the fan curve, but I haven't found anything. I've tried to read the EC values through RW Everything, but apparently there's no interesting values (they are always the same regardless the fan speed) and most of them are greyed out.

I wonder if a patched dsdt can do the job (I even don't know if it's possible under Windows). Any advice?

Edit: Doh, I've just seen that I've posted on Unlocked section, not in the Unlock Request. So Sorry. Maybe move the thread to the most appropriate section.

Eventually I've found the EC firmware inside main bios image. I've found fan tables too. Tables tweaks on testing.

Hi! I'm very interested in this and I'd be willing to test it out on my 5750G. My fan has been ignoring the heat for months, rendering my laptop unusable for gaming or any heavy 3D. Any kind of fix or manual fan control would be very helpful.

@Azarielz
Thank you for this, is there also an option to add your fan control to the BIOS control?
Where can i get it?

@TheBurek
Have a look here how i mod my PackardBell TS11HR (same as 5750G)

@Moglie, thanks, I saw that. That will probably be my next step. But for now, I want to solve the software/firmware problem. It's not that my cooling system is doing its best and failing - it's not even trying. There's no significant amount of dust in there, and the fan works, sensors work also, but it just doesn't want to spin as fast as it needs to.

I have to check some other things for this mod, I have to be quite sure I've changed the right values. I will share the firmware asap, probably tomorrow or friday. Check this thread (or your mail, I've read the one you sent me) daily.

Not sure. Maybe it's possible, but I think it needs a lot of work. Anyway I'm afraid it's beyond my skills. Maybe with bios source would have been easier.

Sure thing! The exact model is: Acer Aspire 5750G-2434G75Mnkk

CPU: Intel Core i5 2430M (Sandy Bridge @ 2.4 GHz)
Motherboard: Acer JE50_HR (Sandy Bridge rev. 09 chipset, HM65 rev. B2 southbridge)
RAM: 2 x 4 GB DDR3 (666/1333 MHz, dual channel)
GPU (integrated): Intel HD Graphics 3000 (GT2)
GPU (discrete): NVidia GeForce GT 630M (GF108, rebranded 540M, Fermi, 2 GB DDR3)
HDD: WDC WD7500BPVT-22HXZT3 (750 GB, 5400 rpm)
Display: 1366x768, ~15"

I guess that's all that's relevant. If I missed something, let me know.

I'm really in big troubles with this. Every EC firmware mod seems to be totally useless. I've modded the firmware changing the values in what I thought to be fan tables (one for every cpu, this is why I've asked you for your system specs) and I've sent it to my big brother for testing it out. I didn't want to risk that any of you could brick his own laptop with an untested firmware. Unfortunately, as my brother reported after flashing, apparently nothing changed at all. I'm afraid I'll have to change approach since working on ec firmware without deassembling it (and with no clue to find fan related values) is a bit much hard. I may try with dsdt but here there's also a big problem. Acer's firmwares use WMI (for sure) and probably SMM too (search them on wikipedia for more info) so any patching try can be very hard to achieve due to embedded/hidden code. I will anyway try to parse the entire acpi table hoping to find out something.

However I have another shot too, but I need someone who would make some tests for me. The task is:

1) Remove battery from laptop
2) Download RW Everything
2) Open it and click on EC icon (it should show the EC window with registers values)
3) Make a screenshot (save it as "1" and close EC window, but not the program)
4) Flash this firmware (only little changes than "vanilla" unlocked one, there's no risk to brick anything if the flash procedure is successful, I need it only for checking if firmware changes reflect on EC regs). When you press OK for starting the flash procedure and after the fan comes to full speed (yes, when it spins like a turbine) reopen EC window and take another screenshot (save it as "2"). Then close RW Everything.

5) After automatic restart open RW Everything, click on EC icon, and take another screenshot of EC window (save it as "3").
6) Send me these screenshots.
