HP Probook/Elitebook BIOS Password Reset [Util]
#1
Lightbulb
I have a system/tool I have created that WILL help some of you reset and clear the Password/TPM on select HP Probook/Elitebook laptops.

[INTRO]
My story begins as this:
A few months back, I got an HP Core i7 Probook 6550b from my dad (that he picked up 2nd hand). It had a busted display though. Upon repair, it was found to be BIOS Password protected. And thus began my quest. Long story short here, I did what I set out to do. I was able to reset the TPM, and clear the password. Along the way, I have applied my technique to a few other models and have confirmed successful TPM reset. This is a software based solution. No disassembly, or removal of any parts (unless your boot order is locked, then there is a little work to be bone, see end of post)

I have outside confirmation that my utility works on these models.

[CONFIRMED]
Elitebook 6930p :New
Probook 6470b :New
Elitebook 8560w :New
Elitebook 8530p :New
Elitebook 2560p
Probook 6550b
Probook 6460b
Elitebook 2560p
Elitebook 2740p
Elitebook 8440p
Elitebook 8640p

And I am confident that my utility will be successful on these listed models as well, but I need help testing.

[NEED CONFIRMATION]
HP 2230s
HP 2730p
HP 4310s
HP 4510s
HP 6455p
HP 6535b
HP 6545b
HP 6730b
HP 6735b
HP 6930p
HP 8530p
HP 8530w
HP 8540w
HP 8560p
HP 8730w
There may be more.

[LOCKED BOOT ORDER]
If your BIOS has a locked set boot order, and will only boot to HDD, you need to take a laptop sata drive and use an external adapter and make it dos boot-able on another host machine also placing the files on this drive, then replace the internal hdd with your created dos boot-able HDD. Powering on the machine will boot to the dos environment. Using DOS commands, navigate to your files and execute them following directions on screen. BIOS will be free of passwords, TPM will be cleared.

[OTHER]
I have a set of 'test' files that may be used on models other then the ones listed here as kind of a fisher. We could tell from a resulting error if we would have success. If you would like to try a model other then what is listed, PM me your UUID and SN.

[USE]
To use this system, select your supported hp probook/elitebook model from the dropdown list. The Serial Number field and UUID Filed will populate with data and will need to be changed to that of your own laptop's. You can get your UUID and SN usually by pressing F1 at system boot. If not, use the included 'HPSET146.EXE' utility included in the 'tools' directory. This must be run from DOS. Once data is entered into the fields, click the patch button and a file will be created in the /output folder. Take the exe file and copy it to your dos bootable media (usb/cd/floppy). Boot to DOS and run the created file.

Inside the /tools directory you will find some tools. A utility to create USB Dos bootable thumb-drives, a windows 98 boot cd iso, and a tool to get SN and UUID.

/backup directory includes four *.bin files should the ones in the root directory get corrupted. just copy to the root dir in event of corruption.

[DISCLAIMER]
There may be unforeseen negative results stemming from use of this system. By downloading and using my tools, you agree to use them at your own risk. This was originally for myself, but I have opened up to the community. I am not a professional programmer. There is no guarantee of success using this tool, even on units that are marked as 'confirmed'.

Thank you for looking. I welcome all feedback good or bad, just trying to help people. Cool

Hi There,

I think it's great having people like you around who can make peoples' nightmares go away. I have a HP 6470b and my BIOS password is locked. As you've stated earlier, under the confirmed models that the tool works on, I saw my HP model in it. But, in the tool there does not seem to have an option for the HP 6470b model. Was another model name used which works for the HP 6470b? Please assist. Thanks and regards.

Thanks for the feedback. I had one user say it worked on a 6470b, but he wont reply back with more information. I haven't been able to confirm that myself as I don't have that model in hand. The app has been updated to v2.5 and includes more unit support. (Im not sure if your using the older release or not). I have left the 6470b off the list, but there is a new 'Make All' feature that will produce all keys for all models in its database, 39 keys in all I believe. Some units will produce multiple keys as there is some known variance in some model types. The new feature will also produce a batch file to run all the keys, as launching 39 files can be bothersome. I refer to this as the "Shotgun' method, as we are going to hit the system with every possible key. This is where most people reply with success for models not on the list. Download link for updated version is still the same.

Just want to say THANKS to Mazzif for this great program! I ran it on my EliteBook 6930p and succeeded.

I don't have much experience in working with DOS, so I made some mistakes until I found the right way.
*First of all "HPSET146" don't work in windows mode. I spent much time until realized that I have to make DOS bootable USB and put HPSET146 in it.
*DOS I used doesn't recognize folders in bootUSB when folders name have space symbols in it or the name is too long (~10 characters long).
*When I got UUID, I write it in "HP Probook Patcher" and it generates me eight exe files named: 6930A, 6930B, ..., 6930H. I didn't know which one to run in DOS. Finally I tried the 1-st one (6930A) and it succeeded!
By the way, even it succeeded, one warning scared me. When I went to bios, I got this warning:
"WARNING: Ensure that your current login method does not require fingerprint.
otherwise you will be locked out of your Notebook if you accept (F1) this reset"
Then I pushed F2 (Don't know what it means, because my bios was set to Norway language), went out of bios, started windows, restarted pc and again went to bios. Password and warnings gone Wink

Yes as from the [USE] portion "If not, use the included 'HPSET146.EXE' utility included in the 'tools' directory. This must be run from DOS." Wink

Some models create more keys then others due to slight variance. 6930B is the most with 8. If one did not work, move on to the next. I'm glad the first one worked though. Use with DOS, you must use standard DOS naming conventions for files and folders.

The DOS version that I've been writing in C is just about ready for release! It's faster, and now even more easy to recover from a forgotten or lost BIOS password. The new system coded from the ground up, and written in pure C, will get your system UUID and SN automatically. Its going to be so simple! It's menu driven, so just boot to USB, select your model and it will do the rest. No more entering 10 digit serial numbers, no more miss-typed 32 character UUIDs! [censored], no more typing anything. No more booting to windows for key creation. It does it all in one stop.

I hope to have a release with at least 10 Models supported by end of year. When I Have my 10, I will release the software. As of now the 6550b, 2530p, 6930p, 8530w, 8460p, 6460b, 2230s and 6455b are coded in and are in test stages. That's 8, so 2 more to go. Sorry for the cheese video, but I wanted to show something. Stay tuned and look my my new release soon!

Hi all, Newbie here Smile
You have helped many users with problems with admin passwords on HP probook and elitebooks, I did not have any success using hpset146.exe so I used hpreadid.exe instead to obtain the UUID and with this information I managed to sort out the problem, I can confirm that for 6530b you can use 6730b in the 'all' directory menu and it works!
your the best!
