http://www.sony.it/support/it/product/VG...29-UN_2831

it is the previous version

Actually I don't know how I got R0200J3 on my FE28B, but if is still possible to get virtualization with R0174j3 it's ok

I suspect that this vaio has a T2300E processor (which does not support VT) but info on the web and when using software like cpu-z are confusing... whether is a T2300 or T2300E is unknow

Hello everyone

I am looking for a better BIOS than the original Sony R0174J3 Phoenix BIOS recommended by Sony for a Vaio VGN-FE31M series laptop.
Main issue is that current BIOS doesn't allow boot from a USB storage device
(flash or HDD).

Also, RAM limitation to 2GB will be also an issue.

I intend to install Win7 x64 on the laptop and I am currently running on XP 32bit.
Thanks for a any advice or help.

Cheers

Hi all. I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FE31HR laptop with a crippled BIOS which I'd like to tweak to verify RAM amount, set speed and timings (it uses i945PM chipset that should support up to 2x2 GB @ 667 MHz instead of the current 2x512 MB @ 533 MHz).
The link to the BIOS update is here.

Hello Steel Angel,

You are in luck! I did the EXACT same upgrade, but on a different Sony Vaio notebook model. I will elaborate more on what I did tomorrow.

Hello Steel Angel,

Sorry for the late response.

My laptop (Chipset: Intel 945GM) once had a 533MHz FSB and 2x512MB RAM. The chipset supports 667MHz. I successfully upgraded the RAM to 4GB despite Sony saying that it would not work. If you try the 4GB and you only see 2GB or no RAM at all, then it doesn't support it. It should support it though. Just make sure you use the correct RAM type and speed. If you have a 32-bit CPU without 36-bit PAE, then you will have 2.7GB, 2.99GB, 3.25GB, or 3.5GB available to you when you install 4GB of RAM. I will do more research on your system and tell you what I find.

To take care of the FSB, I did some research on CPU upgrades for my particular platform (CPU socket, notebook series, chipset, etc.) and I confirmed that I could upgrade the CPU (in theory). After getting the newer/faster CPU (which had an FSB of 667MHz) and installing it, the FSB went from 533MHz to 667MHz! I actually was not originally expecting this great of an outcome, but the graphics, memory, motherboard, and CPU speeds all increased as the whole system had support for the higher speeds. Simply upgrading your CPU can upgrade the speeds of multiple areas of the notebook.

I will do some research on your notebook and tell you what kind of options you have for this.

Your BIOS menus are identical to my own BIOS's menus. I can take care of this problem for you. Your BIOS contains a hidden INTEL Menu. This menu contains CPU, memory/cache, graphics, thermal, audio, PCI, ACPI/power, USB, SATA/IDE/AHCI, etc. settings. I can also increase the size of your Main Menu to over 20 items. These items will display very useful and detailed system specs/information.

You can expect the BIOS mod within the next three or four days as I am booked with BIOS mod requests and I am also exploring further into the BIOS to increase my ability to produce higher quality and more content-rich mods.

~Steven
