Acer Aspire E380 R01-C0 With Unlocked Overclocking Options
#51
Has anyone tried this modded BIOS on the Acer MCP61SM-AM?
It uses the same bios as the MCP61PM-AM, but uses the MCP61S chipset (recognized as MCP61 Rev A2 in CPU-Z instead of the Rev A3 in MCP61P).

My BIOS is stock R1-B1 (I tried the old unlocked E380 BIOS early last year but encountered severe boot problems so I returned it to the standard BIOS).

Tthe latest ABIT retail BIOS we posted works flawlessly. We just are getting to release a version 2 with incorportations from other boards, so looking into the SM probably isnt worth it as it works well on all of the different versions (SM HM AM GS)

Oops. It turns out that mine's an Aspire T180 and not a E380 as I thought. They use the same bios though [I did an md5 hash check and a binary file compare--they're exactly the same].

In any case, i tried to flash it, but awdflash gives me an error about the bios string not matching...
I tried winflash, and it gives an error message:

"This file is no support BIOS Lock function"...

Any ideas?

if you think the bios is the same (I think your correct) follow these insctructions. Notice the /F i added to the flash string.

1. First, we need to prepare a bootable USB to launch DOS and flash the new BIOS. To do so, download the HP USB disk format tool and install it here

2. Once installed, open the utility and select the USB to format. Below, tick the bubble for creating an MSDOS startup disk. It will then want you to point it to a DOS image folder. You will need to download and unzip this DOS image (do NOT use your own DOS image) here Once it has completed formating your drive, open up the USB in My Computer. Verify that there are only three files on the USB, making sure to unhide protected operating system files in explorer to see them. If you see three DOS files, you are ready for the next phase.

3. Now we will copy over the ABIT BIOS image as well as the flash utility. You will need download AWDFLASH and copy it over to your USB here Once awdflash has been copied over, download the Bios image and save it to your usb from here

4. Once these files have been copied over, you are ready to flash. Reboot windows, and when the BIOS screen comes up hold down Esc and select your USB to boot off of. You will then see a WIN98 splashscreen temporarily flash and you will be in DOS. Once at the prompt, type in the following command:

awdflash M613Z_19.BIN /py /sn /cc / cd /cp /wb /r /f

I did that the first time, the only difference was that I removed the space between "/" and "cd"
like this:
awdflash M613Z_19.BIN /py /sn /cc /cd /cp /wb /r /f

because when i didn't, awdflash would spit out the help screen, which means there was a syntax error...

I flashed the stock R01-C0 BIOS a few reboots before I attempted to flash the Abit BIOS. Did this make a difference? Should I downgrade to R01-B1 before trying again?

The error message is:
"The program file's BIOS-Lock String does not match with your system!"
I'm using Award BIOS Flash Utility 8.82. and the M613Z_19.BIN from page 1.

try flashing with /f and no other options

Also, that error message looks like you have some kind of BIOS write protection on it, so check your BIOS setup to see if you can't disable it.

I had the same error message with my Acer T180 MCP61SM-AM and adding the /f to the end of the command worked!! I also used the R01 C0 with over-clocking options and slic 2.1 added for a month or so, although saving the settings in the bios was tricky, it had different and some other useful over-clocking options unlocked.
I have some questions though. Can you add slic 2.1 to the Abit bios even though it's a retail one? And it would be nice to have CPU voltage settings and multiplier settings as well, which would make this BIOS perfect.
Also do you think a Phenom II 925 would work well with this BIOS and MB or would I be better off with a Phenom I, a Phenom x3, a Phenom II x2, Athlon II x2 etc; Do I just need to worry about TDP wattage? I currently have a 5000+ clocked around 3.0 ghz and running great!
Finally, would a Quad Core processor do me any better for gaming if the clock rate is say 2.6 or would I be better off with a Daul Core at say 3.2 ? Sorry for all the questions but I have been following you guys for months now and I trust your opinion. I will donate as soon as I can!

Thanks, Snide
