[NVRAM Request Thread] VT, AHCI, & DEP NVRAM Register Master List
#1
Information
I am creating this thread for all all of those who want a SAFE way to enable VT-x, AHCI, or various other options that do not show up in their Phoenix BIOSs. This method does NOT involve flashing the BIOS. Only the CMOS NVRAM is modified, so any changes made can always be reverted if necessary and will never result in the corruption of the BIOS. Please note that this is NOT a BIOS modding request thread. This is only for NVRAM Registers. Big Grin

NOTE: I am building upon a "master list" of NVRAM registers created by ScuderiaConchiglia (Gary) from notebookreview.com. All credit for the original creation of the list and >95% of the VT registers goes to him. He gathered users' submissions of working NVRAM registers for each notebook/BIOS and organized them into one list. My contributions include the AHCI/DEP registers, posting of the list here, and <5% of the VT registers.

The way that I find NVRAM registers involves the BIOS image itself. The image is decompressed using AndyP's PhoenixTool and then the TEMPLAT0.ROM and STRINGS0.ROM modules are inspected to identify the registers. This method works very well on new-style phoenix BIOS's.

So far, most of the list is occupied by Sony notebook models as it originally came from a thread about Sony Vaio models. I am going to divide this list into different sections for each manufacturer.

As for register compatibility, the BIOS version must be the same. The notebook model is irrelevant. All that matters is that you have the same BIOS version.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you wish to contribute to this list, there are 2 ways of doing so:
1.) Upload/link your BIOS file (dump or official update) here so that I can download it and figure out the registers for VT-x and/or AHCI and/or DEP.
2.) Figure out the register on your own. There are 2 primary ways of doing this. The first involves trial-and-error with symcmos. The second way involves inspecting your own BIOS image. Please double check your work if you use this method.

I will be posting user-friendly tutorials on how to perform both methods of "register hunting."
EDIT: Here is the tutorial on tracing NVRAM Registers on your own.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you have any questions, confusions, or needs for clarification, please post a reply on this thread or PM me.

My ability to add registers to this list depends entirely on user submissions of their BIOS images or their own findings.

INFO: DEP stands for "Data Execution Prevention." It also goes by names similar to "No Mem Protection" "Execute-Disable Bit" "No Mem Execute" etc...

Does anyone have a R2110J7 image (official image or a backup will do)? I cannot seem to find it on the internet. If I had a copy of this image, I could unlock the NVRAM registers of AHCI and DEP for 13 more notebooks as they all share this BIOS version.

Here is a list of registers that I have found in my own BIOS image . The only file you will need from this achieve is the "bios.wph" file. Note: This is an unmodified, flashable image.

This list reflects some of the registers that I have identified functions for, I will be updating this list over time.

•All of the memory cache settings in the "MCH Workarounds:" BIOS menu. •Passive TC1 & Passive TC2 Values •DTS Enable •Processor Power Management •DTS Calibration •Frequency Ratio •MEF Support •EMA Support •Critical Trip Point •Active Trip Point •ALS Support •FACP - PM Timer Flag Value •Enhanced C-states enable •Fast C4 Exit Support •Thermal Control Circuit •PROCHOT# Enable •DBS Cycling Temperature •PCI Clock Run •Serial IRQ Quiet Mode •BIOS iAMTx •Thermal Offset •Thermal Monitor Enable •AC97 Modem PME Enable •Clock Power Management •On-board LAN •Root Port ASPM Support •Timestamp Counter Updates •PXE OPROM •Memory Throttling •TS on DIMM •Port 80h Cycles •Spread Spectrum Clock Chip •!!PCI Express Graphics Port!! •PCI Express Root port settings (such as PCI Express - Root Port 1) •GPLL Power-Down Enable •Azalia - Device 27, Function 0 •a lot of options corresponding to different settings each with the name "Minor Standard" •Vaio Animation Logo •Set Max Ext CPUID = 3 •External Drive Boot •!!VT Feature!! •!!Enhanced AHCI!! •Fast String Operations (NOTE: "FOR DEBUG ONLY") •Installed O/S •Numlock •Hot-Plug Bus Gap •I/O (this is literally the entire name of the option) •various hard drive settings such as "heads" "cylinders" "sectors" etc. •!!Pre-allocated Memory Size (Graphics memory setting)!! •!!Total Graphics Memory (another graphics setting)!! •BIA Control •GMCH BLC Control (backlight/inverter setting) •etc etc etc

I am considering adding a "frequency ratio" column to the NVRAM Master List, but most Intel CPU's have their multipliers locked by the PLL. I do not know very much about this, but I do know that it is difficult to circumvent (involves hardware circumventing). EDIT: This setting could actually be useful to desktop users. I may just post registers for the desktop models instead of notebook models.

To be clear, the "Frequency Ratio" option controls the multiplier of the CPU's external clock rate. My notebook's CPU's external clock is 166.67 MHz. The frequency ratio (ie. multiplier) of the CPU is 14. 166.66666666666666666666 * 14 = 2333.33 MHz (2.33 GHz).

I am also going to be adding a poll to this thread. The poll will ask "What option do you most want added to the NVRAM Master List?" I will include a several pre-defined options. If you have a different setting suggestion, please post a reply in this forum (NOTE: I may add your option suggestion to the poll).

In the future, I intend to add a table of thermal setting registers. I will have to work on the layout of the table though. This process will also involve the identification of a massive amount of registers for each BIOS image, so it will take a while.

Hello!!

I've been looking for a while on how to enable AHCI on my old notebook Sony VGN-CR21S / P.

I have installed a ssd and really goes well because it does not have ahci.

I have installed windows 7 pro 64 bits and 4gb ram DDR800 @ 667 mhz

The notebook pc drivers are here and as the bios that page is:

http://sonyvaiodriver.com/category/sony-...p-drivers/

R1121Q0

Until Friday I will have a new charger for the laptop and I can not verify 100% but should be putting this page.

In the list of NVRAM does not appear that this can be enabled AHCI bios. Is it true? How could enable ?. I would not mind putting another bios the laptop pc.

CR Models:
VGN-CR240E R1121Q0 reg 05BB
VGN-CR290E R1121Q0 reg 05BB
VGN-CR231E R1121Q0 reg 05BB
VGN-reg CR29XN R1121Q0 05BB
VGN-CR220E R1121Q0 reg 05BB

Thanks and hope to answer quickly !!

Hello Emotive,

Sorry for the long response time.

Unfortunately, this BIOS does not support AHCI mode. I did find the Intel VT-x (hardware-assisted virtualization) register though. The NVRAM register that controls VT-x is 05BB. Set it from [05BB] (0000) to [05BB] (0001) to enable it.

So with the VGN-N250E, it IS possible to set AHCI, change amount of video RAM, etc, WITHOUT flashing?

Where can I find more info on how you guys pull this off? I did a little research and i'm coming up with just more questions.

Hello xust-,

It is possible to change options for settings including fan/thermal controls, VT, AHCI, memory cache, PCI, and many more WITHOUT flashing. For a list of interesting registers that I have identified and recorded from this particular BIOS image, please refer to post #4. Unfortunately, the Video Memory settings will not help you to increase the video memory. I think that they will allow you to decrease it though...

Instructions:
1.) Boot into your DOS flashdrive* and type the read command below. If it does not work (Ex. It says that something could not be found), type "C:\" first. This will dump your computer's NVRAM Token Table onto the flashdrive.
2.) Upload your NVRAM Token Table text file (obtained in Step #1) here. Please be sure to tell me the BIOS version, which settings you wish to have modified, and what to set those settings to. At a later date, I will be adding a tutorial detailing the process of modifying your own NVRAM registers.
3.) Boot into the DOS flashdrive and use the write command specified below. Be sure to replace "Modified.txt" with the name of your own modified text file.
4.) Press and hold the power button until the computer turns off. This is necessary with settings that require a power cycle (such as VT-x).

Reading/Writing the CMOS NVRAM:
Code:
Reading:
symcmos -v2 -LDefault.txt ; "Default.txt" is an example file name

Writing:
symcmos -v2 -UModified.txt ; "Modified.txt" is an example file name

* If you need help creating a bootable DOS flashdrive, please refer to this page.

Hello guys,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post but this is my nvram token list the with default options. This applies to my VAIO VGN-FZ21Z with bios R1120J7 to which i have made a RAM upgrade from 2GB to 4GB. There are other values as well but i have posted ONLY the ones that i am 100% about. Where there is a 0 value i have found 00 00 hex so there is no text there, either there is no option or there is no text. I have managed to enable HPET, sata hot plug, VT, disabled the vaio logo at bios boot. You will see different tokens with the same text, i think this is because the bios is prepared for multiple drives for example or i don't know, maybe someone will shed some light. Have fun, be cautious and if you manage to kill it, restore default settings in bios or worst case unplug the bios battery for a while.
