Acer 5739G, Quad Core support!
#1
Hello there,

I bought off this laptop about one week ago and it arrived today. I have a Quad Core CPU, I downloaded the first 'modified' BIOS I could find and tried it with my Quad Core. I got a black screen, no backlight (on screen) at all. only power led lighting up and fan spinning as my notebook gets warm.

My question is; I have never ever got in to BIOS modding so do wonder if you mind taking a look and see if there is anything we can do to make the Quad core work in the 5739G.

The BIOS I did try was this one:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/6268861-post32.html

The CPU I have is this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140543014926
The orginal BIOS can be found here:
http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/BIOS/BIOS/BIOS_Acer_3310_A_A.zip?acerid=633963743487508933&Step1=Notebook&Step2=Aspire&Step3=Aspire 5739G&OS=V10&LC=en&BC=Acer&SC=PA_6

Chipset of laptop is PM45, so it should in theory be able to handle a Quad Core. My Qosmio X300-13o also had PM45 and were able to take this CPU.
A friend of me have been able to upgrade to a 45W CPU with same chipset and same model, but with stock unmodified BIOS by Acer. I haven't tried the stock BIOS with Quad Core. However, with my Quad my laptop fails to boot or even light the screen up at all (Again, I used modded BIOS give above have not tried stock from ACER (Also linked above)). So it must be something in the BIOS.. (Microcode?)

Any help will be much much appreciated,

Thanks for reading

UPDATE:

Today, I've took my laptop apart and tried the Quad Core with ACER BIOS (not modified) and it did not work. This means, there is a thing in this BIOS which does not allow Quad Cores. This again means there should be a way to remove the 'blockade'..

Hi TheUser, let me know if you break that "blockade"!
Quadcore on 5739G would be great for my overheating.. my laptop gets 90+C just being on my homework sites. It died one time after being 104C for too long..

Hey mate.
Since your friend and you got same Laptop. It would be important to check the revision of the chipset and motherboard. Not all PM45 are capable of quadcores. Only the late ones i guess. Its because they switched socked-wiring to support the quadcores, so there are some PM45 chipset (i guess most of them) that physically cant handle the quadcore.

have you tried to remove the thermal-pads and use copper-plates instead?
