HP Proliant Microserver AMI BIOS MOD

Turns out that WoL works with Ubuntu 11.10 after a simple poweroff command. Different machine, but hey.... Couldn't check S4 hibernate yet as this requires a full install / swap partition. Hibernate with test/testproc was without problems.

Code:
root@ubuntu:~# uname -a

Hey guys, I was off this forum for some days (I was on a vacation) and I read your discussion about this server´s ability to go into sleep mode in Linux. It sounds interesting, but now I really don´t have time to play with that - I just want to ask if you think it´s possible to overclock this server (I know that it´s got a passive CPU cooler, but I still want to do this'. You can see the full spec of it here: http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quick...716_na.pdf . The BIOS doesn´t offer any overclocking even after modding and I can´t find any software that can perform the overclocking. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi guys. I am here as a result of discussions on the HomeServerShow and TheAverageGuy tech podcasts. I picked up a HP PRoliant Microserver N40L the other day. I have been following the threads at AVForums and this one. There are various BIOS mods available for the N40L. I am wondering if somebody has a recommendation of what I should use for WHS 2011, in which I want AHCI and perhaps SATA3 enabled? One is called TheBay, and there is one posted earlier in this thread.

Any suggestions?! TIA.

Some updates on Wake On Lan, ruling out a BIOS problem and presenting a solution:

(1) Earlier tg3 drivers used to reset WoL on startup, requiring an "ethtool -s eth0 wol g" command to re-activate (around 2008/2009, see for example http://lkml.indiana.edu/hypermail/linux/...00132.html). Anything derived from such code might be buggy. Issuing the ethtool command on bootup (i.e. in rc.local) won't hurt.

(2) Even with a recent driver, it seems to be mandatory for the Broadcom NICs that the network interface is shut down before poweroff. Some scripts fail here (see below for details). If you are having trouble, try this to debug: Stop any services or RAID arrays manually to prevent data loss. Then do an "ifconfig eth0 down" followed by "halt -f -p". The system should be able to WoL now. Alternatively, the halt binary sometimes supports deconfiguring interfaces using the -i option, i.e. "halt -f -p -i". This should work as well.

(3) With UnRAID and maybe other Slackware based systems, the problem seems to be in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1. In particular, the if_down() function seems to rely on "dhcpcd -k eth0" taking the interface down:

Code:
if [ "${USE_DHCP[$i]}" = "yes" ]; then
echo "/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1: /sbin/dhcpcd -k -d ${1}" | $LOGGER
/sbin/dhcpcd -k -d ${1} 2> /dev/null || /sbin/ifconfig ${1} down
sleep 1
else
echo "/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1: /sbin/ifconfig ${1} down" | $LOGGER
/sbin/ifconfig ${1} down
fi

However, this doesn't seem to be sufficient. Making the "/sbin/ifconfig ${1} down" mandatory enables WoL on my UnRAID systems (5.0 betas).

I'll post these findings together with some more recommendations on the UnRAID forums later.

I am working on one of these server for my brother-in-law. I have it running unRAID perfectly. I have been surfing round the web looking to see if anyone has made progress on enabling S3 in the BIOS or workarounds for unRAID. Has there been any progress on this here or anywhere else that anyone knows about?

@thielj
Have you posted your finding and such on the unRaid forums?

Great. Thank You. I quickly read over that post. If I do those shutdown and sleep script mods, does that mean the server will shutdown when no longer needed AND I can wake it up using WOL from that shutdown state? Considering how fast unRaid boots on this server that is okay until someone maybe mods the BIOS to support 3. I already had WOL in the BIOS that came on the server. Would I still need the modded BIOS to do this?

EDIT:
Tips from that post worked great. Thanks thielj.
