Acer TravelMate B116-M: Modify BIOS default settings
#1
Hi all,

hope to get some help on this: I need to change some BIOS default settings permanently, so they remain after the BIOS resets (reset due to an empty BIOS battery, this happens occasially at customers due to non usage of the notebook fo several months). Here's some info on the device:

Notebook: Acer TravelMate B116-M
BIOS type: Insyde
BIOS download link (BIN & EXE): link

I have three main questions. First, is it possible to modify the following default BIOS settings?

Second, I have an issue with the boot mode. There's Windows 7 running on the device, so the boot mode must always be LEGACY. Although the default boot mode is LEGACY right now, it still happens that the boot mode switches back to UEFI, after a BIOS reset. Acer support couldn't help or isn't willing to. The solution would be to remove UEFI mode from the boot mode selection I guess. Is that possible? Or is there another solution, so UEFI will never be chosen?

Third question: If the settings can be changed, how would I proceed?

Highly appreciated to get help from you!

Thanks in advance

Hi all,

found a way to modify the BIOS using the tool "Insyde H2OEZE (Ease Binary Editor)": link

Problem now is, that I cannot flash the modified BIOS. Error message: "it only supports to flash secure bios on current platform. The image to be uploaded is not a secure BIOS.". Flashing the original BIOS works fine (only .FD file though). The file size of the modified .BIN and the original .FD file are different (BIN around 8 MB, FD around 5.7 MB). I also tried to rename BIN to FD file ending. No success.

Here is the BIOS dump DUDU2002 asked for: link

Could anyone help me flashing the modified BIOS?

Thanks in advance!

Your bios is rewrite protected
Bios mod can be flashed using SPI-programmer+SOIC8 clip only

your bios chip W25Q64DW    ID:0xEF6017    Size: 8192KB (1.8v)

Thanks for your quick reply Dudu2002.

Do you mean by write protection, that there is a version specific checksum implemented? Because updating the BIOS to a newer version from the manufacturer works, so there must be a way, right? I have the checksum for BIOS V1.20 -> CheckSum: 0xDAF8

Does that checksum help and can it be included to the modified BIOS file?

By the way, that's the modified BIN file: link
And I'm using Insyde H2OFFT v5.54 t flash.

Regards
