I'm a total newby to the forum...to BIOS mod, but I just bought a dm4 thinking that it would have everything I need...and the intel 1000 isn't close. I bought a intel 6230, thinking it would be an easy switch.

Here's what I know:

I have an HP dm4-2180 US. HP support takes me to http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softw...b-100515-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=4063&product=5169549&sw_lang= ...to download sp55454.exe [1/1, 4.55M] for BIOS.

Current Bios version is insyde f.14

Here's the id for the current card: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_0084&SUBSYS_13158086&REV_00

I guess I have to install the new intel 6230 wifi card with it running to get that info on the new card...Is that right?

Thanks. Thanks for being here.

Thanks Camiloml. I haven't tried this yet. Is it confirmed?

Is this the same file from the first page of this thread? I'm a little hesitant to flash because my DM4-2180us doesn't respond to the Fn + B or Fn + ARROWS recovery sequence.

If something goes wrong then I wouldn't be able to get back to stock.

It looks like 2 others from this thread have bricked their machines by flashing this for some reason.

This info on this site is great...but I'm a little discouraged. I ran winrar on the bios file I downloaded from the HP site, and the big .fd is listed as /01xxx, so it looks like its RSA protected...which means any change changes the security algorithm and prevents me from using any non whitelisted card.

Then I went to the HP site, and looked up what they had for this box...and there isn't a single card that offers dual band wifi.

I cannot understand why my old HP vista box had a better card than this new one...

OH well...Thanks for being there, folks. If anyone has an idea or even an explanation, I learn from every post.

Pete

Hi! Sorry to intrude, but I flashed that BIOS update because I was having the keyboard issues it purportedly corrects...so that's what's running on my dm4-2180us box right now, and when I unpacked the stock download according to your instructions...it looks like this BIOS is RSA signed...in any case, it had the infamous big /o1xxxx.fd file.

That would make this mod a no go, right?

Took a gamble and flashed this file. It flashed fine but on reboot my DM4 wouldn't post.

Had to send it back to HP under warranty. HP fixed the notebook but I wouldn't recommend flashing this file.

This one should be recoverable by Win+B and USB stick.

Actually usb stick method was no luck for me, tested with different usb sticks formatted in different ways even with hp recovery tools, the only one wish worked was to get the .fd .bin and .sig files in the custom restore directory of the laptop.

i was stuck for 4 hours with that bad deal, before finding the right way to get the laptop alive.

Best Regards.

extract the hp bios with andy's tool copy the .bin .fd and .sig to hp_recovery partition the boot with win+b . the hp recovery process launches and you get the normal boot just after.
