M17xr2 cpu microcode change possible?
#1
Hello,

I have a Alienware laptop m17xr2 with i7 820qm processor. I am asking if is possible yet to add cpu microcode to bios to enable overclocking features which are only available in the extreme 920xm version. the bios is Phoenix Securecode.

Many thanks

O.k

thanks for your reply. I hope one day that this could be done. You would make alot of alienware users very happy.

I enclose a link to digitallife bios forum. There is a dell internal engineers iso. Which includes unlocking bios, service tag change etc.
hope its useful for you

I have an M17x R1 (very similar) so will also be monitoring this. I have a shopping list of things I want to do to my BIOS haha

I really hope that this gets figured out!

Hello,

I see some progress has been made to unlock these bios.

Well done for doing this. Please could you unlock some features adjust some others.

The main ones that of concern are FSB adjustments and tdp limits (throttling is a big issues with these beasts of a laptop)

Also in the bios there is an adjustment for backclock adjustments which is greyed out unless you have the extreme cpu but this is only limited to 5%. Could this be adjusted to 30% or even higher. Also cpu features unlocked.

I see there is another thread concerning the r1 version of this laptop. I have downloaded and ran RWEVERYTHING and saved the acpitbis.rw file which is attached.

Could you let me know is this can be done as it would be worth me buying the i7-920xm for this laptop.

also i have a problem when i try to install xp on this machine. Unless you manually disconnect the dvd drive which is a SATA drive xp cannot install. If there is an option to do this would be great.

Thankyou in advance

Hi goodstone,

Thanks for all the info! I now realize the RW-Everything is no longer needed but thank you anyways for being through. I just completed the Alienware M17x-R1, and now can start the R2 Big Grin

Thanks,
