Why are the graphics are selling? I have an A8Js the graphics too spoiled, I'm in doubt if I purchase a 7700 or a 9650 gt

You can mount 9650m gt only if your card layout are MXM II "reverse" and only if you can upgrade the bios(with a modded bios) before card' swap

I upgraded to 9700m gt...the 9650m gt is like new, it simply pulled out from M50Vn laptop..it's in perfect look and working condition...
But I don't know if 9700m gt is my last upgrade because with this last card, my fan run always @max speed...

My only problem is if after the printer does not work. According to jommener in his work but is always a risk buying the card and then not work .... LOL

Personally, I have a problem! I bought a new geforce 7700 for my A8Js in osstore on ebay and when I put the pc does not play any sound and shows no image at all ... There should be no need to update bios right? The board brought a cd inside the cd featured a bios A8ajs.212 WinFlash but gives error says it is not for my laptop ... What do you think?

Awesome write up! So my A8JS's 7700g has just crapped out... I see green things whenever I move my mouse/drag windows around. I am thinking to do your mod. I just had a couple questions.

First, could you link me to a card that I can buy? I see a few on ebay but I don't want to buy the wrong one. Also, I need the card asap, so maybe one with speedy shipping if possible. Big Grin I really appreciate it.

2nd, I am using windows 7, what do you think is the best way to flash my bios?

Thank you very much!!!
Well, I just tried the Winflash and it seems very easy to use, but I get this error trying to flash your bios:

Warning! The date of BIOS image is earlier than current versioin. Please press [EXIT] button to exit.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi there, I've got an A8Jm model lying around the house doing not much as the 7600Go overheats and outputs green square artifacts on the screen and on the tv output. When playing games it made too much noise and just automatically turns off.

From reading this thread I gather that I can upgrade to a 7700Go or better...Can someone let me know if thats possible with all asus A8J's?( not only A8Js). And how hard is it to mod the bios to run a new card?.
Also, from looking around on ebay I saw an x1700 ATI card that was said to be compatible with A8J models, anyone know if i can use this on my old notebook?
thanks for the help

So I ended up buying an nvidia 9500 GS from ebay for around 150$USD. After installing it my screen is still black (did the bios flash with the bios i was sent by the seller). Windows still booted up as i heard the winxp welcome sound. After hooking it up to an external display i can see the desktop fine. Tried installing the drivers using an inf and display driver from laptopvideo2go.com but that doesnt help; infact the computer still again asks for drivers for the new "display". Can anyone help me out?
thanks

hello,
i know it may be a bit offtopic. First off all i also habe an A8JS and im am not going to replace my GPU. I love this thread however, i think i accidently stumbled across the first of these A8JS replaclement threads and i found it fascination
my problem is a little different however. my notebook starten smelling like burning plastic, it was the Power supply (the part thats in the notebook) that got loose and then sparks or whatever caused that part to stink. i soldered a new wire and everything works fine. but i had to dissassemble the whole notebook to solder it. doing that i also took off the thermal pads (i dont know a better name) on the GPUs RAM and on the Mainboard Chipset. My visual impression is that CPU,GPU and Mainboard Chipset can be threated with common Thermal Paste, i am not sure about the Mainboard Chipset though. But what do i need for the VRAM.
I just dont know what to google for, im in germany and i cant find proper german words, in the store thez sold me thermal tape but it was far to thin. i found this.
http://www.asusparts.eu/product_info.php...ts_id=5572 on a page that might be interesting to other GPU moders.
So maybe you can help me find what i need, i hope my english is sufficient to explain what i am looking for, because i realy need my notebook right now.
regards

OK..... Apologies for being away so long - have been very busy with other stuff! I will now reply to the questions above Smile

xxxlalala : if you just search for 'thermal pads', you should find what you need. They are difficult to get hold of, though. I got these ones once:

http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/Thermal.html

they are probably the best you can buy. If you find a computer store that services laptops nearby they might have some that are cheaper. You can also reuse the old thermal pads if they aren't too badly damaged. To be honest, if you *need* the laptop, and the thermal pads are a bit damaged but half-OK, you could put them back, use the laptop, but just *avoid using any 3D* games or business presentations, and you would be fine for a while!.

Let me know if you need any more advice!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arnieb : The problem (black screen on bootup) can be easily fixed, so don't worry!

The seller has just swapped the vBIOSes around but it is a bit more involved than that.

If you post the BIOS that the seller gave you on here... I can do the mod for you if you like!, and will post a BIOS that you can use and which should work
with your new card on your laptop screen!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

jining : you can use anything as long as it is an ASUS reverse-MXM card and as long as it can physically fit into the laptop. (I have a GTX 260M but it won't physically fit...... until I do my planned case mods!) Smile

I have an A8JS, A8JR (both upgraded to 9650M GT), and also an A8J? - I forgot the letter but I got it for almost nothing (hinges were broken but are fixed now). It has an Intel Core 1 Duo and a useless 7300 graphics card. Even this can be upgraded!

If you post a link to the card you are thinking of, I will let you know if it will work. You will need a modded BIOS (to support your old and new cards), and you will need to flash this first. I can make this for you once you know which card you will be getting!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

highlight : what exactly happened to the old card? (did the old card fail so badly that it also did nothing when you switched on)? It might be worth putting the old card back in, and seeing what happens.

If the old card half-works but the new one doesn't work at all, it is likely that the new one is broken.

The other option is that you actually had a 7600 or something - and therefore the new one isn't recognised.

Can you post high-res photos of the front and back of the old card (and the new card if possible) and I will check they are indeed the same card.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

mrzenith - is your PC an M50 or an A8J? It would be interesting to know if the fan-speed-always-at-100% error occurs on the A8J with 9700M - I thought that issue was limited to the M50?

Just saw - it is an M50. Unfortunately, I can't figure out why this is happening with the M50. It seems that, if you swap the VGA card to any other type, the fan goes to 100%. The A8J series, on the other hand, doesn't have this problem. Can you control fan speed manually using any desktop utilities?

I will ask other mods on this forum in case they have an idea how to fix this if you can't control it manually / from the desktop.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ASUS A8JR : 3GB Ram, Nvidia 9650M GT 1GB Graphics (upgraded from 512MB Go7700 with custom BIOS). T7200CPU (with faster FSB and clock) - plug&play!
Apple Macbook Pro - top spec as of Mid 2012 - used it for a while, back to my ASUS as it as so much more flexible and usable!![/color]
