I think the mistake I made was not putting the bootx64.efi into the /EFI/BOOT directory on the USB stick.

I've now unlocked the Advanced menu and can see a MILLION options!

So far, I have learned how to unlock the advanced menu options in my Acer VN7-591G's BIOS using the help here:

However, my next mission is proving more difficult.

I'd like to mod the BIOS of the nVidia 960m contained in this notebook and I'm making progress, but keep hitting barriers along the way.

So far, I can extract the BIOS for the card from either a 4 MB BIOS backup read from my current BIOS using FPT or from the 8 MB file downloaded from the Acer website.

I can then load that 102 kB file into Maxwell BIOS Editor and adjust the clock speeds and voltages etc.

I am however stumped on getting this BIOS to flash...

I have tried three methods:

1) Using the Acer flash utility by editing the ini file to ignore the fact it's the same BIOS version. This results in the flash process seeming to work until the PC reboots, upon which I get a Secure Flash error - Invalid Firmware Image.

2) Using the Fn + Esc keys to power on the laptop in "crisis recovery" mode. I have placed a BIOS file, named according to the recovery file mentioned by Andy's tool, onto a FAT32 format USB key. The laptop enters recovery mode OK (it does not POST and the fans spin up and USB key is read), but the BIOS never gets flashed. I cannot work out why - perhaps it's because the USB key is 4 GB and I need smaller?

3) Using FPT. This results in an error about protected registers.

Tonight I may try option #1 again with Secure Boot disabled in the BIOS, which I have heard may resolve it. However, I'm still concerned about option #2 not working because I would be reassured if I can emergency flash the BIOS in case I brick the laptop with my attempted nVidia clock speed changes...

Any help or advice is appreciated! (I also have a thread on the Acer forums about issue #2, albeit with an official BIOS; and TechInferno forums about the nVidia BIOS changes required - sadly, I'm not getting any responses yet...)

I found a way around it with many thanks to BD Master's thread here:

Basically, putting the laptop to sleep and then waking it seems to unlock the "protected registers" and allow me to flash my modded BIOS.

Now I'm off to play with this 960m and see what she can really do....

Hi all,

I have an Acer VN7-591G laptop with 860m (BIOS 1.13 here) and i want unlocking nVidia 135MHz limit.

I can extract the BIOS for the card from the 8 MB file downloaded from the Acer website (isflash.fd) with phoenix.

I can then load that 102 kB file (BIOS1813.BIOS) into Maxwell BIOS Editor and adjust the clock speeds.

But how can i flash my card with the new bios ?

I can extract the bios card from this file with phoenix and adjust clock speeds into Maxwell BIOS Editor.

Basically, yes.

You'll need to "repack" the BIOS using "Andy's tool / phoenix tool" for Phoenix/Insyde BIOS - https://www.bios-mods.com/downloads/

You'll then need to put the laptop to sleep to unlock the locked registers.

You'll then need to flash the 4MB BIOS portion using FPT and a command such as follows (double-check this is correct command - I cannot remember - use /? to get the list of commands. xxxxx.rom is obviously the file you want to flash):

FPT -f BIOS xxxxxx.rom
